WeRide and the Future of Autonomous Transportation in Europe
In a historic move for the transportation sector, WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, has officially launched the first commercial deployment of a fully driverless Robo-Bus service in Europe. This revolutionary initiative is taking place in the picturesque Drôme region of France, in collaboration with partners Beti, the Renault Group, and Macif.
Starting March 10, 2025, WeRide will offer its Level 4 autonomous vehicle technology to provide a shuttle service that operates seamlessly on public roads amongst mixed traffic. The service will feature several six-meter-long Robo-Buses that can accommodate up to eight passengers each, and it will be operated by Beti Automated Mobility. The route spans 3.3 kilometers and connects critical points including the Valence TGV station, long-term parking areas, a gastronomy center, and over 150 businesses employing 3,000 staff members.
Benefits and Goals of the Service
The launch aims to foster more flexible mobility solutions between the train station and local businesses while promoting sustainable transportation options for the last mile. Some of the key objectives include:
- - Enhancing connectivity between the train station and local enterprises.
- - Providing a carbon-friendly alternative for commuters traveling between parking facilities and the train station.
- - Facilitating access for workers from businesses to the catering center within the business park.
This undertaking is groundbreaking for several reasons. For the first time, WeRide's fully driverless Robo-Bus is making its debut in Europe, further illustrating the company's global expansion and commitment to innovation in autonomous driving. Additionally, this is the first high-level automated service connecting a train station with a business district, redefining how urban mobility is perceived.
Cutting-Edge Technology and Safety Innovations
WeRide's Level 4 automation not only allows for traffic speeds of up to 40 km/h but also integrates advanced dynamic obstacle avoidance systems. As Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International Business at WeRide, stated, “Our collaboration with Beti enables us to capitalize on our successful track record in markets like China, Singapore, and the Middle East, strengthening our position as a top provider of autonomous driving solutions.”
Moreover, safety is a priority. Benjamín Beaudet, Managing Director of Beti, emphasized that their
