Delta Dental's Commitment to Oral Health
On August 7, 2025, the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation announced a remarkable commitment of
$16.3 million aimed at improving access to quality oral health care across various communities. As the philanthropic wing of Delta Dental of California, this initiative focuses on supporting approximately
200 nonprofit organizations through its Access to Care Grants Program.
Supporting Communities and Health Equity
The
$16.3 million investment is set to equal last year's substantial total, reflecting the foundation's ongoing dedication to enhancing oral health across its
15-state service area and Washington, D.C. Kenzie Ferguson, vice president of the foundation and corporate social responsibility, highlighted, "We are proud to continue our commitment to improving access to care by supporting local nonprofits that serve those most in need."
The grant program aims at fostering
health equity through several key initiatives:
1.
Programs for Seniors and Special Populations: These efforts are targeted towards addressing health disparities, serving vulnerable senior citizens and individuals with special needs.
2.
Innovative and Preventative Care Initiatives: This component focuses on advancing new technologies and prevention strategies to bolster dental health outcomes.
3.
Rural Community Efforts: These efforts aim to enhance dental care services in underserved and remote areas where access is particularly challenging.
By providing these essential grant awards, the Delta Dental Community Care Foundation not only empowers nonprofits to deliver beneficial services but also fosters long-term partnerships that yield significant benefits for the communities served.
Personal Stories Highlighting Impact
The transformative impact of these grants is illustrated through stories like that of Jong Sup Shon, a senior resident who received dental care through the nonprofit partner
Asian Health Services in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from Korea, Jong immigrated to the United States and has juggled numerous small businesses, including a restaurant.
When Jong experienced intense tooth pain, he initially managed it with painkillers until the discomfort escalated to a point where he required hospital care. However, due to language barriers, effective communication with the healthcare professionals proved challenging. Fortunately, through Asia Health Services, he was able to consult a Korean-speaking dentist who provided a thorough explanation of his dental issues. With the help of his dental professional, Jong received essential treatments, including a cleaning and the extraction of a painful tooth. As a result, he is now able to enjoy food without discomfort.
