KCU Primary Care Leader Dr. Gautam Desai Reflects on His ACOFP Presidency and Mentorship
Leadership and Mentorship in Family Medicine
Dr. Gautam J. Desai, a distinguished chair and professor of Primary Care at Kansas City University (KCU), recently wrapped up a transformative one-year term as the first Indian American president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). In a ceremony held in Orlando, Florida, he expressed his deep commitment to advancing family medicine as he celebrated 75 years of the organization. His presidency was marked by a dedication to addressing the needs of physicians, residents, and students across the nation.
Passion for Mentoring the Next Generation
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Desai prioritized mentorship through initiatives like OsteoBridge, a program designed to connect aspiring osteopathic family physicians with seasoned professionals from various backgrounds. This program not only aids students in professional networking but also helps them cultivate essential leadership skills and prepares them for residency.
Furthermore, he led the Family Physicians DO More campaign, showcasing the diverse paths available in osteopathic family medicine. Aimed at high school, undergraduate, and medical students, this toolkit provides informative resources related to career opportunities in medicine, empowering young minds as they navigate their academic journeys.
Dr. Desai firmly believes in the mentoring process, stating, "When students understand the value of mentorship, they can succeed and in turn inspire others." He highlighted the rewarding nature of family medicine, noting that it allows physicians to care for entire families, from children to grandparents.
The Global Perspective
With his extensive experience leading KCU's global health program, Desai emphasizes the significance of global medicine in shaping his leadership approach. He notes that his work with students and faculty abroad has enhanced his listening skills, which are crucial when dealing with patients, students, or fellow healthcare professionals.
“Listening to patients is vital,” he argues. “It’s important to understand their life circumstances to offer the best care.”
This patient-centered approach is at the heart of his philosophy: effective leadership is not about imposing values but about understanding and guiding others toward their goals, especially within varying cultural contexts.
Inspiring Diversity in Leadership
Dr. Desai’s journey serves as a beacon for aspiring physicians, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds. He hopes that seeing someone of Indian heritage in a leadership position will motivate others to pursue similar opportunities. "Leadership can take many forms, and it's essential to redefine what that looks like, especially for future generations,” he asserts.
After dedicating 15 years to ACOFP, including five years on various committees and ten years on the board, Desai is set to continue his service in the organization’s executive committee as the past president. He will also transition to the Leadership Development Committee, focusing on nurturing emerging leaders within the profession.
“Mentorship lays the groundwork for leadership. As emerging leaders develop their skills, they’ll be equipped to guide the future generation,” Desai remarked.
