Exploring the Possibilities of Stroke Recovery
In our society, many individuals post-stroke are told, "You won't improve any further," or, "It's just about maintaining your current state." These statements often lead to an acceptance of a life with no further recovery. However, what if we told you that this isn't always the case? After discharge from the hospital, with adequate evaluations and rehabilitation, there are numerous examples of patients whose conditions can actually improve.
The Overlooked Potential for Improvement
Having worked extensively in clinical settings, we at BRAIN have witnessed remarkable transformations. There have been numerous instances where patients, once deemed immobile, started to show new movements in previously affected limbs. In some cases, it took just a brief intervention to trigger movements that had previously been absent.
For instance, consider a patient whose arm was completely motionless after a stroke:
Before Rehabilitation
The left arm remained completely still post-stroke…
After Rehabilitation
And yet, after just 20 minutes of dedicated rehabilitation, that same arm began to move.

Similarly, concerning previously paralyzed fingers that remained curled:
Before Rehabilitation
The fingers were permanently bent…
After Rehabilitation
However, after just 30 minutes of focused rehabilitation, those fingers began to extend.

These encouraging results aren’t mere coincidences. Through scientifically grounded analyses that address the underlying causes of immobility and through the precise setting of rehabilitation goals, we've been able to tap into capabilities that were previously unrealized. While not every individual will experience such transformations, the fact that many do is a testament to the underlying possibilities that remain.
Our Commitment to Improving Stroke Rehabilitation
At BRAIN, our mission regarding stroke sequelae rehabilitation encompasses:
- - Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in rehabilitation
- - The introduction of cutting-edge rehabilitation technology
- - Partnerships with regenerative medicine clinics
We are dedicated to providing rehabilitation aimed at genuine recovery rather than just vague improvements. By analyzing the root causes of immobility and offering tailored rehabilitation, we strive to maximize the potential for recovery.
It's worth noting that our initiatives have been recognized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's startup grant project, receiving validation concerning the societal significance and feasibility of our endeavors.
Our Vision for the Future
We firmly believe that it's time we rethink the assumption that "stroke sequelae cannot improve any longer." To this end, we are promoting:
- - The widespread adoption of private rehabilitation options
- - Implementation of scientifically-backed rehabilitation practices
- - Research into new rehabilitation methodologies
Our ambition is to realize a society in which stroke sequelae can genuinely improve.
Why Now?
As the population continues to age, the number of stroke patients is on the rise. Meanwhile, the existing medical insurance framework imposes considerable limitations on rehabilitation services. Consequently, society must now critically examine how we handle the potential for recovery.
Invitation to Media Professionals
We are open to sharing on-ground initiatives related to:
- - Rehabilitation practices
- - Recovery case studies
- - Private rehabilitation options available
This is an opportunity to highlight successful recovery stories and the innovative options that exist in our ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
