Okayama University Hosts Exciting Kids' Experiment Workshop in 2026

A Fun-filled Science Day at Okayama University

On August 24, 2026, Okayama University’s Engineering Department took a significant step in raising interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among local youth by conducting the 'Kainoki Waku Waku Experiment Workshop 2026'. Held at the Tsushima Campus, this event was tailored for children attending the Kainoki Kids Club, specifically designed for younger students aged 1 to 6 grades.

This year, 47 enthusiastic children participated, engaging in a variety of scientific activities. The fifth and sixth graders were given the choice to delve into two fascinating themes: creating their own bank using a 3D printer or building a spectroscope. Meanwhile, younger participants could choose from multiple hands-on options such as making slime, creating bath bombs, or designing a buoyancy toy. The event fostered not only creativity and imagination but also provided comprehensive explanations of scientific principles associated with the projects.

Children's remarkable concentration and focus were evident throughout the workshop, which was structured to coincide with the end of their summer vacation. Excitement filled the atmosphere as they explored the wonders of science, leaving them with moments of discovery and joy.

The event was supported by both the Technical Researcher (TR) from the university and five technical staff members from the National Institute of Technology, Tsuyama College. Technical supervisor Miho Kawahara from Tsuyama College noted, "I managed the buoyancy toy activity. The children cheerfully painted and adjusted the water levels for their creations, displaying delightful smiles that left a strong impression on us all. This is our third collaboration with Okayama University for this experimental workshop, and we look forward to continuing this partnership in the future."

Sato Nobuhito, the Vice President and head of the technology department at Okayama University, expressed his gratitude towards the staff who managed the daycare facility, saying, "The children here are the kids of our faculty, and we aim to create a better workplace environment along with childcare support. It’s gratifying for the Engineering Department to contribute to such initiatives that generate excitement and curiosity among children. We aspire to continue these activities in various settings."

Since 2010, both institutions have engaged in collaborative community initiatives targeting elementary students, serving as a precious opportunity for both teams to connect and learn from each other. Furthermore, Okayama University and Tsuyama College have established a comprehensive partnership agreement to enhance mutual training for technical personnel, ensuring the continued development of future talent in the region.

The community outreach and scientific awareness initiatives spearheaded by the Engineering Department of Okayama University are co-hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, underlining the ongoing commitment to make science enjoyable for children. The university encourages everyone to anticipate further engaging activities that foster a love for the scientific world.
