In a remarkable initiative, Okayama University has partnered with Okayama Hosen High School to run advanced 3D printing workshops within their DX High School Support Program. This program aims to furnish students with skill sets using digital technology, and the recent session saw participants dive deeper into concepts learned in a previous foundational workshop.

The hands-on workshop, led by graduate student Yuya Shimizu of Okayama University’s Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science, involved students applying 3D CAD software, Autodesk Fusion, to design their own bridge models. They then put these models to the test by conducting strength experiments and structural analysis. What unfolded was not just about building, but about understanding the intricate balance between design and material science.

During the event, graduates from Hosen High School who are now university students took on mentorship roles. They guided the high schoolers through the fascinating process of conducting destruction tests, where various loads were applied to the 3D printed bridges. The students experienced first-hand how changes in printing angle, internal structure, and design choices could lead to significant variations in strength. This practical approach not only enhanced their understanding of 3D printing but also illuminated the real-world implications of their designs.
