LG and MediaTek Unveil Groundbreaking Mobility Solution at Auto Shanghai 2025

In a remarkable showcase of innovation at the Auto Shanghai 2025, LG Electronics, a prominent leader in the mobility technology sector, partnered with MediaTek, a renowned semiconductor company, to present an avant-garde solution for in-vehicle systems. This revolutionary product, called the Concurrent Multi-User (CMU) framework, operates on the Android Automotive OS (AAOS) and is poised to enhance the consumer experience for vehicles increasingly equipped with advanced screens.

The CMU framework stands out as the first of its kind, enabling multiple passengers to engage with various screens concurrently on a unified Android system. As automotive screens evolve in size and functionality, this technology answers the growing demand for enhanced content consumption. The driver can navigate the system while the front passenger streams videos, and rear-seat passengers can simultaneously engage in gaming – all independently and securely.

Previously, the setup involving a central information display (CID) along with two rear-seat entertainment (RSE) screens necessitated running multiple Android virtual machines (VMs). However, the CMU optimizes this by streamlining operations into a single Android system, significantly lowering CPU, memory, and storage requirements, thus minimizing overall system burden.

Moreover, the CMU framework is tailored to create personalized digital environments for each vehicle occupant. Users can log into their respective screens, connect Bluetooth headphones or game controllers, manage privacy settings, and even share movies, games, and media across various displays. Notably, parents are given control over content suitability, allowing for a safe and age-appropriate environment for younger passengers.

Automakers will also reap the benefits from this efficient architecture, which supports advanced user experiences even on lower-spec CPUs, effectively reducing costs and resource demands. The CMU feature has been introduced as a key aspect of AAOS15, enhancing the basic functionalities of AAOS with unique offerings such as independent Bluetooth headphones support, Text-To-Speech capabilities, parental controls, and simple gesture replication.

Leveraging its years of experience in optimizing mobile Android performance, LG aims to push boundaries in automotive technology. In August 2024, LG and MediaTek announced the integration of the latest automotive system-on-chip from MediaTek into the CMU framework, enhancing processing capabilities to facilitate development and efficiency. This collaboration is highlighted through a live demonstration of the CMU framework on the MediaTek Dimensity Auto Cockpit MT2718, illustrating a promising glimpse into the future of automotive user experiences.

Mike Chang, Corporate Vice President at MediaTek, emphasized the reliability and advanced standards that these solutions adhere to, giving automotive OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) the confidence to innovate within their designs. LG’s Vehicle Solution Company President, Eun Seok-hyun, articulated the commitment to revolutionizing in-vehicle experiences with such innovative technologies. As part of their vision for mobility, LG plans to continue collaborating with industry leaders like MediaTek to develop more integrated and intelligent solutions, transforming vehicles into connected living spaces with unprecedented entertainment and personalization options.

In conclusion, the premiere of the CMU in Auto Shanghai 2025 marks a significant leap forward in the evolution of in-vehicle technology. With an eye toward the future, LG and MediaTek are paving the way for a new era of automotive connectivity and multimedia performance.
