HCLTech Grants $1 Million to NGOs for Climate Initiatives
HCLTech, a prominent global technology firm, has made waves with its recent announcement regarding the second edition of the HCLTech Climate Action Grant in the Americas. This initiative will distribute a total of
$1 million among three non-government organizations (NGOs) who presented innovative and scalable solutions to the urgent climate crisis. The selected winners include
Osa Conservation, along with
Daily Acts and
Ocean Wise, who will receive significant funding to advance their environmental initiatives.
The Winners and Their Projects
Osa Conservation
Osa Conservation, based in Costa Rica, has been awarded
$500,000 to implement its
Climate Lifeboat corridors project. This initiative aims to create migration routes for various species who are struggling with the adverse effects of climate change. By re-establishing connections between fragmented tropical habitats, this project seeks to promote ecosystem resilience and adaptability, safeguarding biodiversity across vast areas.
Daily Acts
The runner-up, Daily Acts, located in California, will receive
$250,000 for its community-driven climate resilience program. This initiative merges strategic government planning with grassroots efforts, aiming to improve water management practices, mitigate stormwater issues, and enhance social infrastructure within neighborhoods. By focusing on key areas such as Petaluma, California, Daily Acts plans to foster community engagement in combating climate challenges and building resilience.
Ocean Wise
Meanwhile, Canada’s Ocean Wise will employ its
$250,000 to pursue a
kelp forest restoration project along the Pacific coast. The initiative's objectives include managing the overpopulation of urchins, which threaten the health of kelp ecosystems. Through innovative technology and extensive ecological research, Ocean Wise aims to boost marine biodiversity while also benefiting local coastal communities that depend on these ecosystems for their livelihoods.
Growing Interest in Climate Solutions
The second edition of the HCLTech Climate Action Grant showcased a marked increase in participation, with applications surging by over
70% compared to the previous year. This significant growth highlights the escalating urgency and commitment surrounding climate action across the Americas. Notably, applicants hailed from
10 eligible countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and the United States.
Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, Senior Vice President of Global CSR at HCLTech, expressed enthusiasm about the recipients' potential impact. “We are excited to support this year's awardees in expanding their innovative projects aimed at reconnecting vital natural habitats, enhancing community resilience, and rejuvenating marine ecosystems across the Americas,” she stated. “The substantial increase in applications reflects the pressing need to combat climate change and shows the importance of backing initiatives that strive for sustainability and environmental integrity.”
A Commitment to Sustainability
In its inaugural year of 2023, the HCLTech Climate Action Grant committed
$5 million over five years to foster sustainable solutions addressing climate crises throughout the Americas. The funding represents part of HCLTech’s broader commitment to CSR initiatives, which has netted upwards of
$175 million towards various sustainability efforts to date.
HCLTech's recognition as an
Industry Mover by the SP Global Sustainability Yearbook 2023 exemplifies its dedication to environmentally effective practices. The company continues to forge partnerships with prominent organizations, such as Feeding America and Girl Up, to enhance community welfare and drive a positive environmental impact.
