Discover Modern Japanese Art: Guided English Tours and Spring Festival at National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, is excited to announce the launch of its new Collection Tour titled "Explore with Us," specifically designed for English-speaking visitors. This initiative aims to enrich the museum experience by deepening visitors' understanding and appreciation of its extensive collection of modern Japanese art. Scheduled every Thursday, the 30-minute guided sessions occur at 10:30 a.m. and noon, allowing participants to explore selected artworks with insightful commentary from museum guides. Not only does it cater to first-time visitors to Japan, but it also welcomes returning guests, making it an enriching opportunity for anyone interested in Japanese art.

Located conveniently near the Imperial Palace, the museum is surrounded by the beautiful grounds perfect for a leisurely stroll, especially during the cherry blossom season. This March, in conjunction with the flowering season, the museum will host the "Blossoms in Japanese Art: Spring Festival," from March 13 to April 12, 2026. This event highlights Kawai Gyokudo's iconic piece, "Parting Spring," an Important Cultural Property depicting cherry blossoms—a fragile artwork featured only once a year due to its sensitivity. Alongside this masterpiece, the festival will showcase other works that celebrate Japan's spring flora.

Amidst this cultural celebration, visitors can take a moment to relax in the museum’s Japanese-style resting area, where they can enjoy the cherry blossoms. Additionally, the museum will offer themed spring goods for sale, providing unique souvenirs for those who wish to take a piece of Japanese spring home.

The festival runs daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., extending to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with Mondays off, except for March 30, during this special period. Admission is priced at JPY500 for adults and JPY250 for university and college students, a small fee for a day filled with art and beauty.

To enhance the visitor experience even further, the museum has introduced a multilingual guide app, "Bloomberg Connects," which offers a range of features, including expert insights and information about the museum’s facilities such as shops and dining options. This app serves as a valuable tool for navigating the museum and fully engaging with the diverse offerings it provides.
