Celebrating Black Surf Culture: A Great Day in the Stoke Returns to Surf City USA

A Great Day in the Stoke: A Celebration of Black Surf Culture

The fourth installment of A Great Day in the Stoke (AGDITS), proudly presented by Lexus, is set to take place in Surf City USA on September 27, 2025. This unique surf competition and cultural festival shines a spotlight on Black surf culture, emphasizing connection, water safety, and community health.

AGDITS has become more than just a surfing competition; it has evolved into a joyful celebration that unites the global Black surfing community. This festival is completely free and aims to uplift and empower participants through a series of exciting activities and events. Major sponsors, including Lululemon and Complex, are returning to support the event and help promote a rich culture that is often overlooked in the surfing world.

What to Expect at AGDITS

This year’s festival promises a plethora of events suitable for all ages. Attendees can witness elite surf competitions featuring the top Black surfers from around the globe. There will be opportunities for free surf lessons, live performances by local talent such as We The Commas, and a dedicated Kid Zone sponsored by Bones Loves Milk.

For the adults, a brand-new AGDITS Beer Garden will be available, providing a relaxed space to enjoy a drink while mingling with others in the surf community. One of the festival's highlights is the popular Double Dutch Contest, which invites participants to showcase their skipping skills in a fun and vibrant environment.

Furthermore, the Yoga and Wellness Zone sponsored by Lululemon will cater to those looking for relaxation and mindfulness activities, aligning with the festival's theme of health and wellness.

A Movement for Change

Beyond the festivities, AGDITS aims to be a driving force for equity within the surfing community. The event is inspired by the vision of Nathan Fluellen, the founder and award-winning travel show host, who has dedicated the past five years to advocating for representation and access in surfing for Black athletes. This festival serves as a platform to break down barriers and nurture emerging talents from the African diaspora, paving the way for future generations in the sport.

One inspiring example of this impact is Julian Williams, a longboard and shortboard champion, who recently made history as the first Black Hawaiian surfer to earn a wildcard entry into the World Surf League Challenger Series at the US Open of Surfing. This milestone represents significant progress in an industry where diversity has been historically minimal.

Join Us for the Celebration

The fourth annual A Great Day in the Stoke is not just an event; it's a movement to amplify access, equity, and cultural inclusion in surfing. Whether through supporting athletes in reaching professional levels or educating newcomers about water safety, the mission remains clear.

This celebration will open its doors to everyone on September 27. For further details and to learn how to participate, visit A Great Day in the Stoke website or follow them on Instagram @agreatdayinthestoke.

Mark your calendars and join the festivities as we honor the beauty of Black surf culture and strengthen our community!
