ASEAN Cultural Exchange Program to Enhance Regional Cooperation in Arts and Heritage

ASEAN Cultural Exchange: AHEAD50 Program

In an era where cultural collaboration fosters mutual understanding, the ASEAN Human Resource Development Scholarship Partners Support (AHEAD50) program proudly announces the arrival of its seventh cohort, comprising four officials from the ASEAN Secretariat's Culture and Information Division (CID). This special initiative focuses on the theme of Culture and Arts and aims to strengthen ties between Japan and the ASEAN countries.

Scheduled from July 26 to August 1, 2026, the visiting officials will engage with Japanese policymakers, practitioners, and researchers, enhancing cultural ties and understanding. The program will allow participants to exchange ideas on the development of culture and arts, especially in the context of promoting the cultural and creative industries as well as safeguarding cultural heritage.

The visit will include tours to prestigious institutions such as the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the National Theatre Training Institute, and other cultural organizations dedicated to cultural heritage protection.

Program Overview

The visiting group will arrive in Tokyo and Ishikawa, where they will dive into a unique experience designed to reflect Japan's rich cultural landscape. Activities planned include:
  • - Cultural Seminars: Engaging sessions with professionals from Japan's extensive network of cultural agencies and institutions.
  • - Site Visits: Exploration of significant cultural landmarks including visits to the Kanazawa College of Art and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, where officials will also partake in a gold leaf experience, reflecting traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
  • - Cultural Workshops: On their retour to Tokyo, officials will experience a workshop at the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless, providing insight into the intersection of technology and the arts.

Through these interactions, the AHEAD50 program aims to equip its participants with valuable insights and knowledge that can be shared across the ASEAN region. This is essential in supporting a cohesive approach to cultural development, particularly in policy-making and creative practices. The knowledge gained is anticipated to positively influence the cultural landscape within ASEAN, enhancing cooperation not just at a regional level but also as a bridge to Japan.

The Significance of AHEAD50

Launched as a part of the 50th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN friendship and cooperation, the AHEAD50 initiative is designed to provide promising officials from the ASEAN Secretariat an immersive educational experience about Japan's policies and systems. By enhancing human resource development, the program not only aims to bolster the capacity of the ASEAN Secretariat but also to facilitate smoother collaboration with Japan.

Overall, the AHEAD50 program represents a vital step in the ongoing partnership between Japan and ASEAN, highlighting the significant role of cultural and artistic exchange in building a shared future. As cultural enthusiasts and professionals gather to share knowledge, the seeds of collaboration can flourish, potentially enhancing the creative sectors within ASEAN countries. This initiative promises to yield insights that resonate far beyond the program’s conclusion, fostering long-term cultural ties and mutual growth.
