Confident and Committed: Young DIYers Rise Amid Uncertainty in Home Renovations
A New Era of DIY: Younger Homeowners Taking Action
In an age characterized by unpredictability, a fresh wave of younger homeowners is taking their home improvement projects into their own hands. A recent survey, conducted by CRAFTSMAN®, sheds light on the resolute mindset of Millennials and Generation Z, showing that they are more determined than ever to complete their home renovations in 2025.
The Drive Behind DIY
According to the CRAFTSMAN survey, which engaged 1,000 homeowners aged 25 to 40, over 75% of the participants expressed confidence in their ability to finish their planned projects for the year. This determination is fueled by not just necessity, but a desire for creative freedom and the satisfaction that comes from doing it themselves. The top projects on their wish list include replacing bathtubs or showers, interior painting, and creating built-in storage solutions.
Eric Bernstein, President and General Manager of CRAFTSMAN, emphasizes the resilience of today's DIYers. He remarked, "These individuals face challenges head-on, overcoming obstacles through sheer hard work. This determination not only transforms their living spaces but also cultivates a profound sense of accomplishment that endures long after the work is done."
Facing Challenges Head-On
Despite their confidence, the survey revealed that a significant number of projects encounter delays, often due to overestimating necessary skills and time. More than 40% of DIYers admitted they frequently miscalculate how much time and effort will be required. Additionally, 84% noted that they seek assistance from friends and family, underscoring the communal spirit often inherent in DIY projects.
Technology plays a crucial role in their journey. YouTube continues to be the predominant resource for learning new skills, used by 67% of respondents. Family members and friends also serve as vital sources of support, with 45% and 31% respectively turning to them for advice and assistance.
Time and Budget Management
Effective time management remains a common hurdle. Procrastination often leads to underestimating project duration, with 38% of respondents indicating they misjudge how long tasks will take. Moreover, unexpected issues arise once the project is underway, making it crucial for DIYers to keep their schedules flexible.
Budgeting can also pose significant challenges. Around 34% of participants cited cost estimation as the most daunting aspect of their projects. As expenses can easily spiral, a helpful tip is to include an additional 10-20% in the budget to account for unforeseen costs.
The Rewarding Journey
Despite the obstacles and potential setbacks, the overwhelming majority of DIY enthusiasts remain undeterred. Only a mere 2% of projects are entirely abandoned—a testament to their resolve. The survey found that a significant 67% of respondents feel a sense of pride and achievement that drives them to complete their projects, even amidst the unexpected challenges. Post-completion, 65% are inspired to embark on new projects, often aiming for even more complex tasks than before.
CRAFTSMAN's Commitment
In light of these findings, CRAFTSMAN introduced its BUILD ON™ initiative in April 2025, aiming to capture the DIY journey. Their campaign, "What You Build Builds You," encourages DIYers to face challenges with confidence and celebrates the hard work that goes into every project. CRAFTSMAN is committed to being a steadfast partner in this journey, offering tools and resources needed to empower DIYers at every stage.
