CADO and 4AIR Forge Alliance to Streamline SAF Registries for Aviation Sustainability
CADO and 4AIR Join Forces to Streamline SAF Registries
In a significant move towards promoting sustainability in the aviation sector, the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) and 4AIR have announced a strategic partnership aimed at harmonizing their Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) registries. This collaboration primarily focuses on enhancing interoperability, ensuring data integrity, and reducing the risk of double issuance of SAF certificates within both commercial and business aviation realms.
The announcement, made on July 22, 2025, marks a pivotal step towards creating a fully operational SAF market. By aligning their registration systems, CADO and 4AIR aim to provide a transparent framework for tracking SAF transactions. According to Kennedy Ricci, President of 4AIR, this collaboration leverages the strengths of various aviation sectors to effectively tackle the pressing challenge of decarbonizing the industry.
The unification of commercial and business aviation signals a robust demand for more sustainable fuels, fostering greater transparency while mitigating risks associated with the SAF value chain. Ricci stated, "This alignment not only encourages the development and adoption of SAF but also simplifies the claiming process under voluntary or regulatory frameworks for the industry."
Michael Schneider, Executive Director of CADO, emphasized the need for cooperation among registry providers to ensure that emission reductions are tracked consistently. He commented, "When registry providers work collaboratively on interoperability, we can establish standardized ways to monitor and report on emission reductions. Such a unified approach will promote SAF acceptance and demand in the market while potentially lowering procurement costs and administrative burdens related to SAF and its environmental benefits."
This collaboration follows a similar agreement announced with 123Carbon, signaling CADO's commitment to developing interoperability across various SAF registries, which is vital for establishing a trustworthy and efficient marketplace for sustainable fuels.
About CADO
Founded in March 2025, the Civil Aviation Decarbonization Organization (CADO) operates as a not-for-profit entity under Canadian law, headquartered in Montreal. CADO's primary mission is to manage and maintain the SAF Registry originally developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
As the founding member of CADO, IATA continues to provide operational assistance for the SAF Registry, which serves as a global tool to systematically record SAF transactions. The registry enables airlines and corporate customers to monitor the environmental benefits associated with their use of SAF as it travels along the supply chain, thus meeting legal and voluntary sustainability obligations.
The SAF Registry
This innovative registry system ensures that the environmental advantages of sustainable aviation fuels are meticulously tracked throughout their lifecycle. It was developed with input from various stakeholders, including airlines, government agencies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), fuel producers, and corporate travel management companies. It adheres to the IATA SAF Accounting and Reporting Methodology, which standardizes how environmental benefits from SAF purchases are accounted for across different locations.
About 4AIR
4AIR stands at the forefront of sustainability in the aviation sector. As a leader committed to sustainability solutions that extend beyond traditional carbon neutrality, the company provides a comprehensive framework that supports various environmental initiatives, including SAF, carbon offsetting, and cutting-edge technologies.
Its innovative Assure SAF Registry is a state-of-the-art blockchain-based platform designed to expedite the adoption of SAF in business aviation. This platform offers essential features like transparency, traceability, and data analysis, empowering stakeholders to make informed decisions while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
With the recent partnership between CADO and 4AIR, the aviation industry is poised to take significant strides toward achieving sustainability goals while navigating the complexities of decarbonization and regulatory compliance in the years to come.
