New Initiative to Propel Geothermal Energy Development
In a groundbreaking move towards expanding geothermal energy, Project InnerSpace, a non-profit research entity devoted to accelerating geothermal growth globally, has teamed up with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). This collaboration aims to solidify geothermal energy as an essential technical area within SPE’s core engineering disciplines. This partnership was initiated during an event held on August 4, 2026, in Richardson, Texas, where the organizations announced their plan to engage the oil and gas industry in the geothermal movement.
Catalyzing Systematic Growth
To support this initiative, Project InnerSpace has allocated a grant of $100,000 under the program named, “Catalyzing Systemic Growth of Geothermal Across SPE Technical Directions.” This seed funding is tailored to stimulate a wide range of repeatable initiatives that are expected to thrive within SPE over the upcoming years. The fundamental goal is to harness the full expertise of the oil and gas sector to facilitate geothermal energy advancements.
This initiative encompasses two main components. The first involves the creation of a geothermal technical supplement in the Journal of Petroleum Technology (JPT). This print publication will present articles curated by SPE experts emphasizing the operational and technical symmetries between the oil and gas industries and geothermal energy. Moreover, it will spotlight real-world field applications, demonstrating how knowledge and expertise can be exchanged between these sectors.
Engaging Core Engineering Disciplines
The second workstream will usher in geothermal-centric technical initiatives led by SPE Technical Directors, focusing on six pivotal engineering fields: Drilling, Completions, Data Science, Health, Safety, and Environment and Sustainability (HSES), Production and Facilities, and Reservoir Engineering. Through this initiative, each Technical Director will acquire the necessary funding to curate discipline-specific geothermal projects aimed at involving both professionals and student members, thus establishing a lasting commitment to geothermal energy within SPE.
