Sumitomo Corporation Invests in Chile's Dos Amigos Copper-Gold Project with Tintina Mines

Sumitomo Corporation, headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, recently announced its strategic entry into the Dos Amigos Copper-Gold Project located in the Atacama Region of Chile. This investment comes through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) formed in partnership with G Mining Group, marking a significant step in Sumitomo's commitment to expanding its mineral resources business. The joint investment amounts to approximately C$48 million in Tintina Mines Limited, a Canadian mining company actively engaged in developing mineral resources in Chile.

Partnership Details

The newly formed SPV represents a 50/50 partnership with G Mining Group, and after participating in Tintina's private placement, it now holds a 25% equity stake in the company. This investment not only secures Sumitomo a substantial interest in the Dos Amigos Project, but it also supports Tintina’s efforts to acquire full ownership of the mining project, aiming for 100% control. This financial backing will facilitate critical developmental steps towards achieving a final investment decision for the project.

Economic Insights

The Dos Amigos Project is poised for significant growth, with a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) completed in 2026. This assessment defines measured and indicated mineral resources of approximately 101 million metric tons, with inferred resources estimated at around 256 million metric tons. The mining venture is projected to have a lifespan of about 25 years, with development already in progress in the surrounding areas. This includes adequate infrastructure for transportation and power, making it a strategically advantageous site for mining operations.

Moreover, the anticipated annual production includes approximately 37,000 metric tons of copper alongside 57,000 ounces of gold, emphasizing the project’s expected profitability and its role in bolstering copper supply as demand is anticipated to rise globally.

Strategic Focus on Copper Resources

Sumitomo has recognized copper as a critical mineral due to its increasing demand tied to global economic growth and technological advancements. In aligning with G Mining Group, known for its engineering and construction expertise in the mining sector, Sumitomo is not merely participating in existing projects but is also actively identifying new ventures that hold promise in the mineral resource industry.

Established in 2006, G Mining Group has successfully completed multiple mining projects on time and within budget, addressing the growing complexity that modern mining projects often entail. Their knowledge and capabilities complement Sumitomo's expertise in project management and resource development, allowing for effective collaboration in the mining realm.

Looking Ahead

Sumitomo Corporation’s joint venture in the Dos Amigos Project signifies a strategic move to enhance its mining footprint in Chile, recognizing the country’s wealth in minerals such as copper and gold. Through this investment, the company aims to contribute to a stable supply chain of essential resources while simultaneously seeking further opportunities to expand its mineral exploration and development initiatives.

With the Dos Amigos Copper-Gold Project showing promising potential and Sumitomo’s solid backing through its partnership with G Mining Group, the future looks bright for both enterprises as they aim to capitalize on the booming demand for copper resources in the global market.
