Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has made a significant move in the renewable energy sector by acquiring the Gawara Baya project in North Queensland, Australia. This hybrid project combines a substantial onshore wind farm with an advanced battery energy storage system (BESS), marking a pivotal investment for CIP's flagship fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V).

Overview of the Gawara Baya Project



The Gawara Baya project features a robust setup of a 408 MW onshore wind farm complemented by a 104 MW battery energy storage system. Located on Gugu Badhun Country, just southwest of Ingham, this ambitious initiative seeks to provide clean energy to approximately 240,000 Australian homes while contributing to significant reductions in carbon emissions, estimated at about 1.2 million tonnes annually.

With all major regulatory approvals secured, CIP has finalized its investment decision and achieved financial closure, securing a remarkable AUD 1.7 billion in funding through a consortium of 10 banks. The project is set to commence construction imminently, with a full operational launch expected by 2030.

Economic and Community Impact



The Gawara Baya project is not only a milestone for CIP but also a boon for the local economy. It is projected to inject over AUD 200 million into the Queensland region, generating up to 500 direct and indirect jobs. The undertaking includes various local employment opportunities along with procurement and supply chain participation, which is expected to boost the regional economy significantly.

CIP has already established long-term agreements with notable energy companies, including Stanwell and SmartestEnergy, to secure energy offtakes. Participation in the Australian Government's Capacity Investment Scheme further ensures revenue certainty, a crucial factor as the construction phase approaches.

Thomas Wibe Poulsen, a Partner at CIP, expressed optimism regarding the investment, stating, "The acquisition of Gawara Baya is a unique opportunity for CIP to deploy significant near-term capital from our fifth flagship fund to bring the project into operation and deliver critical energy infrastructure for Australians." He further emphasized the transformative potential this project holds for the Australian energy landscape.

Yi-Hua Lu, another Partner at CIP, underscored the importance of Gawara Baya by affirming its role as a substantial long-term investment for the region. Lu stated, "This project will support job creation, spur infrastructure development, and provide a reliable energy supply necessary for the continued economic growth of Queensland."
