MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Strengthens Global Ties with Japanese Maritime Schools

Strengthening International Maritime Education

The MOL Magsaysay Maritime Academy Inc. (MMMA), located in the Philippines and operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, has recently signed a comprehensive agreement with five prominent Japanese maritime colleges to strengthen international exchanges. This significant agreement aims to foster educational cooperation, with a particular focus on enhancing the quality of maritime training and producing future maritime professionals prepared for a global landscape.

In July 2025, MMMA will launch a series of international exchange programs involving participants from Takamatsu College of Technology, Toba National College of Maritime Technology, Hiroshima National College of Maritime Technology, Ohshima National College of Maritime Technology, and Yuge National College of Maritime Technology. These exchanges will promote faculty and student collaborations, facilitate the sharing of academic resources, and ultimately enrich the maritime education experience.

Prior to this agreement, MMMA hosted a week-long international exchange program in March 2025, welcoming four students (including one female student) and two faculty members from Ohshima National College, along with six students (two of whom were female) from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. During this program, students engaged in immersive activities that included living and studying alongside MMMA peers. They attended joint lectures and participated in simulated exercises utilizing the academy's advanced simulator facilities located on their ship-in-campus.

The program also featured a vibrant Cultural Show, where students from both institutions showcased their respective nations' dances, pop music, and traditional performances. The event highlighted the cultural differences while allowing students to bond and learn from each other. This exchange of lifestyles, cultural practices, and educational methods provided a rich experience that fostered new friendships and mutual understanding.

Expanding Horizons Through Collaboration

The signing of the comprehensive agreement marks a transition from a one-institution focus to inclusive participation from all five Japanese institutions, greatly broadening opportunities for international collaboration in maritime education. Moving forward, this initiative aims to invest in the diversification of learning while fostering mutual growth among future maritime professionals who will play critical roles in the shipping industry.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines remains committed to addressing the sustainability issues within its group, particularly in the realm of human resource development and community enhancement. By engaging in seafarer training and job creation, the company plays a vital role in building a responsible social infrastructure that ensures safe operations, thus supporting the daily lives of communities.

A Bright Future Ahead

The establishment of the MMMA, in partnership with Magsaysay Maritime Corporation, reflects a shared vision for cultivating a new generation of skilled and globally-minded maritime professionals. As the world of maritime transport evolves, such initiatives are crucial for empowering youth and enhancing maritime education standards across borders.

The MMMA looks forward to the upcoming exchanges with pride and anticipation, fully aware that these efforts will help establish a firm foundation for future collaborations and lasting connections in the maritime industry. Through these educational exchanges, students will not only expand their knowledge and skills but also develop a broader worldview, which is increasingly important in today's interconnected world.
