A Message from the Artists and Organizers
Renowned chanson critic Shuhei Ohno recalls the first festival that commenced in July 1987 at Hibiya Public Hall—a venue lacking even elevators for equipment. His fond memories reflect the perseverance and passion present in each festival iteration. Ohno famously quoted Fukamidori’s wisdom:
“Don’t make chanson an academic exercise. Let the audience enjoy it.” This motto continues to inspire the festival.
Producer Aiyoko shares how the festival has grown and evolved since its founding, celebrating its 39th iteration in 2025. Aiyoko remembers her first time at the festival as a transformative experience, likening it to a debut in the adult world. For her, 'the heart of song' has always been the vital message conveyed through each performance.
Special guest Anju Mira, who has diligently pursued her craft for a decade, emphasizes how deeply enriching her encounters with their chanson teachers have been. Miranda notes,
“The world of chanson is endless, and I am incredibly grateful to perform alongside my talented peers.”
