Celebrating 55 Years of Ping Pong Diplomacy

On April 13, 2026, a momentous event took place at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, marking the 55th anniversary of the iconic Ping Pong Diplomacy between China and the United States. This commemoration was organized by the General Administration of Sports of China, along with China Media Group (CMG) and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. It brought together over 500 participants, including officials from governmental agencies, international organizations, representatives from the sports and media industries, as well as youth delegates from both nations.

During the event, Shen Haixiong, the president of CMG, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering closer ties between the people of China and the USA through exchanges and collaboration. He highlighted the importance of mutual learning and cooperation as they embark on the next Five-Year Plan for China. Shen expressed CMG’s readiness to collaborate with various sectors to reinvigorate the spirit of Ping Pong Diplomacy, contributing to a community with a shared future for mankind.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, Jan Carol Berris, vice president of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, who actively participated in the original Ping Pong exchanges 55 years ago, shared her hopeful vision for the future. She remarked that the respect and friendly collaboration symbolized by Ping Pong Diplomacy are vital for building a solid, stable, and respectful bilateral relationship. Such ties will not only serve the interests of both peoples but also contribute to global peace and development.

Petra Erika Gummesson Soerling, president of the International Table Tennis Federation, described Ping Pong Diplomacy as a landmark in table tennis history. She expressed her hope that its spirit continues to strengthen cross-border friendships and connections.

Throughout the event, former table tennis players, including Liang Geliang, Zheng Minzhi, Connie Mae Sweeris, and Judy Louise Hoarfrost, shared their reminiscences of the historic Ping Pong exchanges that helped bridge the divide between China and the USA over five decades ago.

A notable highlight of the celebration was the premiere of CMG's documentary, “The Silver Ball: A Journey Beyond.” This film illustrates how the sport of table tennis can promote exchanges and understanding between the peoples of China and the United States.

Furthermore, the ceremony set in motion a series of youth sports exchange activities between China and the USA planned for 2026. These initiatives aim to continue the legacy of cooperation and friendship established through Ping Pong Diplomacy, nurturing the bonds that can grow from shared interests and sportsmanship.

In conclusion, the commemorative event served not merely as a reminder of a historical moment but as a pledge for ongoing interaction and goodwill between two great nations. The spirit of Ping Pong Diplomacy lives on.
