AFSP Illinois Provides Essential Resources to Combat Holiday Blues

AFSP Illinois Offers Guidance for the Holiday Season

The holiday season, often depicted as a time for joy and unity, can unfortunately amplify feelings of sadness, loneliness, and stress for many individuals. Acknowledging this emotional struggle, the Illinois chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is emphasizing the availability of hope, healing, and support for anyone who may be feeling overwhelmed during this time.

Angela Cummings, the executive director of AFSP Illinois, stated, "For some, the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's can magnify feelings of loss, isolation, or anxiety. It’s crucial to acknowledge those emotions and take proactive steps to protect your mental health. Sometimes, just talking to someone can make a significant difference."

Research by the National Alliance on Mental Illness indicates that approximately 64% of individuals living with mental illness experience worsened symptoms during the holiday period. To help combat these holiday blues, AFSP Illinois encourages individuals to take proactive measures. Here are the top ten techniques designed to support mental health during the festive season:

Coping Strategies for the Holidays

1. Spend Time Outdoors: With shorter daylight hours, getting outside can help improve mood. Consider walking, sitting in sunlight, or enjoying a sunrise.
2. Reach Out to Others: Connecting with friends, family, or neighbors can alleviate feelings of loneliness. Be sure to check in on those who might be feeling isolated.
3. Prioritize Sleep: Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and avoiding screens before bedtime can enhance rest quality.
4. Take Regular Breaks: Scheduling downtime away from social media and heavy news cycles can relieve some holiday stress. Practicing mindfulness or meditation can be beneficial.
5. Simplify Your Tasks: Allow yourself the flexibility to simplify holiday obligations. Whether that means skipping a gift exchange or delegating tasks, it’s okay to let go of some responsibilities.
6. Balance Social Time and Alone Time: Engage in gatherings that feel comfortable and allow for quiet activities that provide solace.
7. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to additional commitments that could lead to further emotional strain.
8. Protect Your Mental Health: Keep therapy appointments, adhere to prescribed medications, exercise, and manage alcohol consumption effectively.
9. Seek Resources If Needed: AFSP provides suicide prevention resources and educational material at their official site.
