Collaborative Session between Okayama University and Kyushu Institute of Technology on J-PEAKS Project
On April 21, 2025, Okayama University, located in Okayama City, engaged in a productive exchange session with the Kyushu Institute of Technology, both of whom have been selected for the J-PEAKS initiative. This initiative, which stands for "Promotion of Regional Core and Characteristic Research Universities," is aimed at bolstering research capabilities through collaboration among selected universities.
The session took place at Okayama University’s Tsushima Campus, specifically in the Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE). The primary objective of this meeting was to share insights and knowledge garnered from the J-PEAKS initiative and strategize on the further promotion of J-PEAKS at both institutions.
Attendees from Kyushu Institute of Technology included Vice President Tomomi Miyake along with other key personnel involved in the J-PEAKS initiative. Representing Okayama University were Vice President Norihito Sato and senior URA officers, who highlighted the university's strategies for emphasizing the significance of the J-PEAKS approach in achieving its long-term vision, outlined as "Okayama University Long-Term Vision 2050."
During the deliberations, Kyushu Institute of Technology introduced their initiatives under J-PEAKS, covering various aspects such as organizational structure for promoting J-PEAKS, budget management, educational support for graduate students, PR strategies, and reforms in human resource systems aimed at sustainable development. This led to lively discussions about the organization and operation of the J-PEAKS projects at both universities.
Vice President Sato shared Okayama University's comprehensive approach, noting that the J-PEAKS initiative is not merely a research development project but rather part of a larger framework to realize their long-term vision. He emphasized that J-PEAKS is being utilized strategically to reform organizational systems and to enhance collaboration among all university stakeholders, fostering an environment where everyone involved feels engaged and empowered.
The exchange session provided a platform for both universities to share challenges and successful case studies regarding the J-PEAKS initiative. It also facilitated deeper ties and collaborations moving forward. Okayama University expresses its intent to partner not only with the current J-PEAKS selected universities but also with others in the future, fostering shared growth and innovation beyond institutional boundaries.
Through collaborative efforts, Okayama University, alongside Kyushu Institute of Technology and other selected universities under J-PEAKS, is committed to revolutionizing the higher education landscape in Japan. The focus remains on transitioning from competition among universities to co-creation, contributing to the development of Japan's research capacity and driving social transformation.
The Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE)
The Co-Creation Innovation Lab (KIBINOVE) serves as a centerpiece in these collaborative efforts. It is part of a facility development project supported by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), funded through a second supplementary budget for FY2022. The lab aims to promote the application of research outcomes to solve domestic and global social issues and to foster new industries, including startups.
This engagement signifies a pivotal moment for Okayama University as it aspires to cultivate a research environment that contributes to sustainable societal development. As the initiative progresses, further updates and opportunities for engagement will be announced. Both Okayama University and Kyushu Institute of Technology look forward to continuing their ambitious pursuit of research excellence and innovation.
