Photo Exhibition Highlighting Everyday Life of Refugees on World Refugee Day

Photo Exhibition: Living Here and Now - From Meheba Refugee Camp in Zambia

In honor of World Refugee Day on June 20, AAR Japan (Association for Aid Refugees) is hosting a poignant photo exhibition titled "Living Here and Now - From Meheba Refugee Camp in Zambia" at the Montbell Shibuya store from June 19-21, 2026. This exhibition is held in collaboration with Montbell Co., Ltd. and MIYOSHI Co., Ltd., featuring captivating photography by Hiroko Hirota, who captured her subjects in the Meheba refugee camp in Zambia during May 2026.

On the actual World Refugee Day, a special talk session will take place, where Hiroko will discuss not only her experiences in the refugee camp but also share insights into the lives and perspectives of those residing there. Through her photographs, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the human experiences behind the term 'refugee,' which often conjures up notions of despair and hardship.

The exhibition aims to shift the focus away from typical representations of refugees and highlight the vibrancy and resilience found in their daily lives. Hiroko's photographs present intimate glimpses into the lives of families in the Meheba camp, capturing their expressions and everyday activities. It also includes a unique feature: photographs taken by the refugees themselves using “Disposable Cameras,” offering an authentic view of their lived experiences.

This initiative encourages visitors to look beyond the heavy burdens associated with the refugee label and appreciate the individual stories of perseverance and hope. The exhibition will also showcase photographs collected by AAR staff members from various refugee support activities across Asia and the Middle East, underlining the organization’s extensive efforts in humanitarian support.

Hiroko Hirota, the talented photographer behind this exhibition, hails from Tokyo and began her photographic career in 2010 after her studies in broadcasting at Nihon University. She is a recognized artist, having won accolades such as the 2026 Women Street Photographers Artist Residency and being selected for the APA AWARD 2021.

Her previous exhibitions include notable projects like "Serquyosh - Light Overflowing" and "Celebration of Spring" at prominent venues in Tokyo. Hiroko’s work aims to illuminate the rich human experience within challenging circumstances and foster discussions about humanity and compassion.

The exhibition is a compelling reminder of World Refugee Day's significance, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 to raise global awareness about refugees' protection and support. Events around the world stand to honor those facing adversity, and this exhibition seeks to contribute to that dialogue by foregrounding personal stories and shared humanity.
