Dianetics Volunteers Expand Mental Health Initiatives in NYC Streets and Subways

Dianetics Volunteers Spread Mental Health Awareness in New York City

In an inspiring initiative in early March, volunteers from the Hubbard Dianetics Foundation at the Church of Scientology of New York engaged in a significant outreach program aimed at enhancing mental health awareness. The event was part of a global campaign that spanned across 50 countries and 250 cities, aiming to bring mental health resources directly to the public.

The dedicated team set up tables in busy locations, including Herald Square and the Times Square–42nd Street subway station. They offered free stress tests to passersby along with copies of Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health by L. Ron Hubbard. The response was overwhelmingly positive, attracting a diverse mix of New Yorkers—ranging from teenagers to retirees, locals, and tourists from places like Algeria, Ecuador, and India.

As temperatures dipped, volunteers remained steadfast, even taking their outreach underground to the subway system where they continued to reach out to the bustling commuters during rush hours. Hundreds of individuals engaged with the program, including musicians from a nearby Ecuadorian band. Many participants began to open up about their personal stresses and challenges, revealing a common desire for solutions and support.

One participant, fondly dubbed “Figure it out Michelle” by her family for always holding things together, expressed relief at discovering Dianetics as a new resource to help manage her burdens. Another man shared how he felt overwhelmed whenever problems arose in his life, viewing Dianetics as a potential path to change his mindset. A 60-year-old man, shaken by recent family tragedies, received his own copy of Dianetics along with an introductory session, demonstrating the profound impact the outreach had on participants.

The volunteers were inspired by their own experiences with Dianetics. For instance, when a young woman requested an Arabic edition of the book, a dedicated volunteer ran twelve blocks to fetch one, ensuring that she received the help she sought. This commitment underscores the foundation’s mission, which has made the book available in 50 languages, catering to a global audience.

Marty Gottlieb, a seasoned Dianetics volunteer, remarked, “Once people see what is really bothering them and talk about it, they often want to improve their mental health.” His insights reveal a truth that resonates across cultures: everyone grapples with challenges, and there's strength in seeking help. He added, “I’ve lived in New York all my life and have seen people facing all kinds of problems. It is rewarding to see people recognize what is holding them back and take steps to address it.”

Celebrating its 75th year, the book Dianetics has sold over 22 million copies worldwide. This outreach in New York City was part of a concerted global effort aimed at promoting mental health, encouraging individuals to take proactive steps in their mental wellness journeys.
