Treasure Island Marina's Major Renovation Set to Start in June 2026
A New Era for Treasure Island Marina
The Treasure Island Marina is set to undergo a major transformation, marking an exciting development for the Bay Area's recreational boating landscape. Kenwood Investments, in partnership with Suntex Marina Investors, has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art 168-slip marina at Clipper Cove, with construction anticipated to commence in June 2026.
The Development Journey
This joint venture agreement is pivotal as it seeks to replace the aging and environmentally detrimental wooden docks currently in use at Clipper Cove. These docks are a prominent feature of the marina, which has not seen a new entitlement in over 25 years and sits between Treasure Island and Yerba Buena Island. The project corresponds with the community's evolution and the growing demand for modern maritime infrastructure.
Previously, this project received unanimous backing from the Board of Supervisors in 2019, showcasing strong support for revitalizing the marina. With approvals already secured from the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the joint venture is on track, subject to final agreements with the Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA).
Environmental Considerations
The new marina is designed with longevity and environmental stewardship in mind. It will feature wrapped steel guide pilings along with floating docks, ensuring resilience against anticipated sea-level rise. This kind of foresight is critical in today’s climate, which cautions against traditional building practices that may not withstand future conditions.
Enhancing Treasure Island's Appeal
Darius Anderson, CEO of Kenwood Investments, emphasized the potential impact of the new marina on Treasure Island’s appeal. Anderson stated, "This will be an incredible addition to the recreational features that are an integral part of making Treasure Island a true treasure in the Bay." The marina is expected to support various kinds of boats, enhancing the island's recreational offerings.
A Commitment to Community
Suntex Marinas, a key player in this venture and one of the largest marina operators in the United States, currently manages more than 95 marinas nationwide. Their presence in the Bay Area is growing, with a focus on providing exceptional service and fostering a sense of community among boat users. Bryan Redmond, CEO of Suntex, remarked on the historical significance of Clipper Cove and the company's mission to contribute positively to local marina culture.
"Clipper Cove is not only an historic location but also a unique place in one of the largest natural harbors in the world," said Redmond. ”We are proud to work with Kenwood and the City to make this marina a crown jewel of San Francisco Bay."
The Path Ahead
As anticipation builds for the groundbreaking next summer, both Kenwood and Suntex are eager to engage with the local community. They plan to incorporate feedback from local sailors and stakeholders, ensuring that the design and implementation phases meet and exceed community expectations. Mayor Lurie and his team, who have been instrumental in advancing this project, have received praise from Anderson for their dedication and collaborative efforts.
With the first TIDA meeting held recently to discuss final approvals, the timeline is tight, but the team remains optimistic. The upcoming marina could transform not just Treasure Island, but also set new standards for marina developments in the region.
