Hanwha Defense USA Selected for Major Naval Shipbuilding Project in Philadelphia
In a significant development for the maritime construction industry, Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) has been chosen as the inaugural shipbuilder by TOTE Services, a prominent maritime solutions firm known for its expertise in vessel construction management. This groundbreaking selection involves the construction of a Medium Landing Ship (LSM) intended for use by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, marking a pivotal moment for HDUSA and its future in naval shipbuilding.
The contract, under the Vessel Construction Manager (VCM) program, is valued at a notable
$269 million and encompasses the build of at least one LSM at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard. There are also options for up to three additional vessels, indicating a promising future for further collaborations between HDUSA and TOTE Services.
Michael Coulter, the President and CEO of HDUSA, expressed enthusiasm for this award, emphasizing that it underlines the strategic investments made by Hanwha into its technology and workforce since acquiring the Philly Shipyard in 2024. "Our goal has been to establish a robust capacity for producing vessels for the military and other federal clients, and this contract represents a significant step in that direction," he commented.
Jeff Dixon, President of TOTE Services, pointed out the efficiency of the VCM model, highlighting its swift transition from request for proposals to actual contract initiation. He noted that through a competitive process, favorable contract terms were secured that would benefit the U.S. government and indicate a shift in how the Navy and Marine Corps plan to enhance their fleet’s capabilities. He appreciated the efforts made by PAE (Portfolio Acquisition Executive) Maritime in rethinking acquisition processes and removing traditional bottlenecks.
Significant preparations have been underway at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard, as HDUSA employees have been present to ensure the yard is ready for naval work. Currently, the site has successfully delivered four National Security Multi-Mission Vessels, further showcasing its capacity to meet military needs.
This year has also witnessed HDUSA actively working on acquiring a controlling interest in the Philly Shipyard, a move that aligns with their long-term growth strategies. The $2.2 billion VCM contract is set to support the ambitious plan of the Navy and Marine Corps aiming to establish a fleet of
35 LSM vessels, with the inaugural ship expected to be completed by
2030.
As HDUSA continues to expand its operational footprint, it seeks to evolve through organic growth, establishing strategic industrial partnerships, and selective acquisitions. The company’s commitment to developing local job markets and building platforms tailored to the strategic needs of defense partners is pivotal in adapting to the changing landscape of military needs.
