XCMG Mobilizes Heavy Equipment for Rescue Efforts in Nairobi After Building Collapse

XCMG Joins Forces in Nairobi to Aid Rescue Operations

On October 23, a devastating building collapse occurred in Eastleigh, a bustling neighborhood in Nairobi, Kenya, involving an 18-story structure. Opening its doors to business earlier that day, the building was occupied by shopkeepers and workers at the time of the disaster. Within moments of the collapse, emergency responders including the Kenyan Armed Forces, the Red Cross, and the police rushed to the scene to initiate search and rescue operations.

Due to the large volume of debris and heavy layers of concrete, immediate assistance from heavy lifting and demolition equipment was critical. Upon learning about the incident, XCMG Group, a notable construction machinery manufacturer, activated its emergency response protocols. The company’s Kenyan branch collaborated closely with the Kenyan National Disaster Operations Center and police rescue teams. In response to an urgent request for equipment, XCMG dispatched an excavator on the same day and followed up with a 25-ton crane the next day, showcasing their promptness and commitment to assist.

The XCMG team worked under the guidance of local rescue teams, focusing on clearing pathways and unearthing trapped individuals beneath the rubble. William Sifuna Watitwa, a police personnel officer for the Nairobi North sub-region, highlighted the excavator's crucial role in rescuing two survivors from the debris. The crane also played a pivotal part, allowing rescue workers to lift heavy concrete sections from above, thereby alleviating the weight of the debris and improving access to potentially trapped survivors.

As a company that has been operating in Kenya for several years, XCMG considers itself part of the local community and is devoted to providing support during times of crisis. Fredrick Nyasani, an administrative officer at the Kenyan branch, expressed, "In emergencies like this, XCMG has both the responsibility and the obligation to use our specialized equipment and technical personnel to assist Kenyan rescue teams in saving lives."

By October 25, local government representatives reported that five individuals were still unaccounted for, while four others were receiving treatment in hospitals. XCMG's rescue team remains committed to supporting ongoing local efforts and will stay on-site until all their responsibilities are fulfilled.

This operation not only emphasizes the importance of effective corporate responsibility in times of disaster but also highlights the significant impact that timely and well-coordinated machinery deployment can have in saving lives and aiding rapid recovery in crisis situations. XCMG's actions are a testament to the power of community collaboration and the vital role of heavy equipment in disaster management and recovery.
