Stockholm Exergi Unveils Ambitious Carbon Dioxide Removal Facility to Combat Climate Change

Stockholm Exergi's Revolutionary Carbon Capture Initiative



In a monumental step towards climate action, Stockholm Exergi has announced its decision to construct one of the world's largest carbon capture and storage facilities, designed for the permanent storage of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂). This strategic investment, amounting to a staggering SEK 13 billion, positions Sweden and the European Union (EU) closer to achieving their ambitious climate objectives. With construction set to commence immediately, the facility is expected to be operational by 2028, marking a historic transition from planning to active implementation.

A Vision Realized



The CEO of Stockholm Exergi, Anders Egelrud, emphasized the significance of this initiative: "This is a historic moment for Stockholm Exergi and for the green transition. Our long-standing efforts in bio-CCS have reached a transformative point. Today’s decision symbolizes our shift from plans into action, solidifying our leadership in the global arena of permanent CO₂ removals."

The project's funding will stem from a combination of public support and private investments targeted at acquiring negative emission certificates from organizations keen to meet their climate commitments. The selected location for this transformative facility is the energy port adjacent to Värtaverket in Stockholm, a site already known for its sustainable heating and energy production.

Impact of the Facility



Once operational, the facility is anticipated to capture and permanently store an impressive 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year—exceeding the total emissions generated by road traffic in Stockholm during the same period. This technological advancement builds on decades of established carbon capture practices, with the process implemented since the 1970s. Stockholm Exergi has already been running a test facility since 2019, further refining the methods used for carbon capture.

The storage solution, meticulously monitored, ensures that captured CO₂ is safely contained beneath the seabed in geological structures, where it gradually mineralizes over time.

A Collaborative Success



Carlo Maddalena, Senior Director at APG and Chair of Ankhiale, expressed pride in the collaboration that has facilitated this ambitious endeavor: "This investment decision is a groundbreaking landmark, a culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork. Bio-CCS will play a crucial role in the journey towards achieving net-zero emissions, and we are honored to be part of this significant project."

As Stockholm works to become a climate-positive territory by 2030, this facility is vital to the city’s plans for future sustainability. Emilia Bjuggren, Chair of Stockholms Stadshus AB, reiterated the importance of accelerated climate action: "We must speed up our transition, and we are resolutely committed to doing so. A significant aspect of this transition will be the integration of bio-CCS technology."

For the transport and storage of carbon dioxide, Stockholm Exergi has partnered with Northern Lights. This collaboration represents a significant opportunity for Northern Lights to enhance its capabilities, laying the groundwork for similar projects aimed at achieving negative emissions. Such endeavors could pave the way for a burgeoning new industry, with the Nordic and European regions positioned as frontrunners.

Understanding Bio-CCS



Bio-CCS (Bio Carbon Capture and Storage) refers to the innovative technology designed to capture biogenic CO₂ before it enters the atmosphere and store it permanently in geological formations. This process creates negative emissions, essential for offsetting emissions that are hard to eliminate completely. The Beccs Stockholm facility aims to amplify the sustainability benefits already provided by Värtaverket, which harnesses biomass residues like wood chips and treetops to generate energy.

This initiative is supported by a blend of funding from the EU Innovation Fund, aid from the Swedish government, and private market revenues. Stockholm Exergi operates at the forefront of reducing the city's climate impacts, delivering efficient heating and electricity solutions to over 800,000 residents through an extensive 3,000 km district heating network.

With over 800 employees, Stockholm Exergi is dedicated to preserving the environment while providing essential energy services.
