Expansion of Zephyr RTOS Ecosystem



In an exciting development for the world of real-time operating systems, the Zephyr Project has announced growth within its ecosystem. Notable companies Renesas and Wind River upgraded their memberships to Platinum status, while new entrants Blecon and Embeint have joined as Silver members. This change signifies a notable increase in collaboration and innovation in the field of embedded systems, particularly as demands rise for secure and resilient IoT solutions.

The Zephyr Project is an open-source initiative that operates under the Linux Foundation, aimed at creating a resource-efficient, flexible RTOS designed for a variety of devices. Its growth reflects the increasing importance of a developer community that prioritizes collaboration, security, and adaptability. According to Kate Stewart, Vice President at the Linux Foundation, the project's expansion demonstrates both the community's strength and the critical need for compliance with modern regulatory frameworks, such as the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).

A Robust Ecosystem



Zephyr RTOS stands out due to its extensive software libraries that cater to a multitude of applications, including industrial IoT, wearables, and machine learning environments. The platform has been widely accepted due to its support for more than 750 different board types, showcasing compatibility with a diverse range of embedded microcontrollers from manufacturers like Arm and RISC-V, among others. The recent version 4.1, launched in March 2025, provides developers with reliable building blocks for future-proof connected products.

Renesas, known for its robust offerings in the semiconductor sector, had joined the Zephyr Project the previous year. The company is committed to leveraging its expertise in microcontrollers and advanced processing technologies to enhance Zephyr's open-source RTOS offerings. Aish Dubey, a senior executive at Renesas, emphasized the significance of open-source software in meeting today's complex safety and cybersecurity standards. The collaboration with the Zephyr leadership aims to expedite developments and broaden access to high-quality RTOS solutions across diverse industries.

Wind River, another founding member of the Zephyr Project, has also elevated its membership to Platinum. Paul Miller, the company's Chief Technology Officer, highlighted how the project is capitalizing on open-source innovation to create a cross-architecture RTOS that is essential for both security-critical environments and the emerging demands of edge AI applications.

Introducing New Silver Members



Joining as Silver members, Blecon and Embeint are set to introduce unique offerings that complement the Zephyr ecosystem. Blecon specializes in enabling secure Bluetooth connectivity for IoT products, leveraging Zephyr's comprehensive software frameworks. Donatien Garnier, from Blecon, noted that the combination of Zephyr's production-ready software and hardware support equips customers with the tools needed to accelerate their product launch capabilities.

Embeint focuses on simplifying the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence into ultra-low-power IoT devices. Phil Valencia, CEO of Embeint, expressed enthusiasm about the seamless support and flexibility provided by the Zephyr platform. The collaboration with Zephyr allows Embeint to dedicate time and resources towards innovative features while relying on a dependable RTOS backbone.

Upcoming Events and Collaborations



To highlight the progress of the Zephyr RTOS community, the upcoming Open Source Summit North America, scheduled for June 23-25 in Denver, Colorado, will feature dedicated tracks focusing on the various aspects of the Zephyr ecosystem. For developers unable to attend, the Zephyr Developer Summit set for August 17-21, in Amsterdam, will delve into themes of simulation, testing, and automation, presenting insights from industry leaders and enhancing the knowledge-sharing experience within the community.
