DuPont's Innovative Water Solutions Improve Access to Clean Water in Kenya

In a significant contribution towards enhancing public health, DuPont has inaugurated a new multi-faceted water treatment facility in Baringo, Kenya, coinciding with World Water Day 2026. This new plant marks a considerable advancement in the community of Kampi Ya Samaki, where families previously struggled to access clean and safe drinking water. With this initiative, DuPont aims to improve living standards and public health for residents who have historically depended on contaminated water sources.

The water treatment plant, the result of DuPont’s ongoing collaboration with the charity ChildFund, employs advanced technological systems, including DuPont™ IntegraTec™ ultrafiltration modules and DuPont™ FilmTec™ reverse osmosis elements. These innovative technologies are instrumental in effectively removing harmful contaminants such as fluoride, which has posed severe health risks to the community in the past. For decades, Lake Baringo, the primary water source for the settlement, has been plagued by excessive fluoride levels that exceed World Health Organization (WHO) safety standards. Residents have reported cases of dental fluorosis and a heightened risk of skeletal fluorosis due to long-term exposure.

The newly commissioned facility is set to benefit around 20,000 individuals through an expansive distribution network that will service 1,500 households, alongside providing clean water to three schools and a healthcare center. This initiative not only focuses on immediate improvements in water quality but also aligns with Baringo's public health strategies and long-term water management plans.

The project has gained support from various local agencies, including the Baringo County Government and the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, ensuring that community health priorities are prioritized. This collaboration has laid the foundation for sustainable solutions that can be replicated in similar communities and regions facing water-related challenges.

DuPont’s commitment to this project showcases the impact of integrating advanced water treatments with expert knowledge, asserting the potential to face the deep-rooted water issues affecting many rural communities across Africa. Alex Lane, the Regional Commercial Director for DuPont Water Solutions, emphasizes the strategic impact of such partnerships.
