American Skin Association Strengthens Commitment to Skin Health with SPOTS Initiative
The American Skin Association (ASA) is excited to announce a renewed collaboration with the Sun Protection Outreach Teaching by Students (SPOTS) program. This award-winning initiative is designed to enhance skin health awareness among students ranging from preschool to high school, focusing primarily on skin cancer prevention and early detection strategies. This renewed partnership reflects ASA's dedication to educational outreach as a means to combat skin health issues.
SPOTS is spearheaded by distinguished dermatologists, Dr. Sofia Chaudhry from Saint Louis University and Dr. Lynn Cornelius from Washington University School of Medicine, both based in St. Louis. The program involves students from over 60 medical schools across the United States who engage with local youths through interactive activities, personal stories, and comprehensive classroom training. The teaching materials, which are available for download, facilitate an engaging learning experience that effectively conveys crucial information about skin safety.
Howard Milstein, Chairman of ASA, stated, “Our ongoing partnership with SPOTS showcases the transformative power of education in our fight for skin protection and health. By starting education at a young age, we can instill sun-safe habits in youth, which can lead to a lifetime of healthy skin.” He also acknowledged a generous contribution from the Johnsen Family, honoring Millicent Johnsen, a former ASA board member who played an essential role in the organization’s educational initiatives. Her legacy lives on through this vital partnership.
SPOTS goes beyond just providing information; it actively engages students in important sun safety practices. Through direct interaction, medical students educate children on how to perform regular skin self-examinations, the risks associated with artificial tanning, and the significance of protective clothing and sunscreen. During the current academic year (2024-2025), SPOTS has already impacted over 5,000 middle and high school students, along with more than 600 preschool and elementary school children.
Dr. Laurin Council expressed the importance of the SPOTS program, stating, “Every day, nearly 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer. Programs like SPOTS are crucial in the prevention of this disease. Early education can greatly reduce overall sun exposure and help ensure a healthier future for our young people.”
In addition to its educational efforts, SPOTS actively addresses skin cancer disparities; it emphasizes that melanoma can manifest differently on various skin tones. This initiative aims to provide life-saving information and promote awareness among students from all backgrounds, aiming to bridge gaps in knowledge and access to preventive care.
Looking forward, ASA and SPOTS are committed to another fruitful year of delivering innovative skin safety education in classrooms across the nation. For those interested in learning more about the SPOTS program, additional details can be found at spotseducation.org.
