Shanghai Electric Unveils Three Innovative Solutions for Energy Transformation at Enlit Asia 2026
Shanghai Electric Unveils Energy Solutions at Enlit Asia 2026
During the pivotal energy sector event, Enlit Asia 2026, held from September 22 to 24 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Shanghai Electric showcased three groundbreaking solutions addressing energy transformation challenges in the ASEAN region. The theme of this year's conference, "Powering the Archipelago," reflects the company's commitment to innovation in energy systems. With over 11,000 attendees and 280 exhibitors, the event serves as a critical platform for industry leaders and innovators to share insights and shape the future of energy in Southeast Asia.
Solutions for a Sustainable Energy Future
The solutions presented are tailored to tackle pressing issues within the ASEAN energy landscape, notably carbon emissions from existing thermal power generating systems, increasing the share of renewable energy sources, and ensuring the stability of island power networks. These innovations also focus on providing low-emission fuels for shipping and aviation, reflecting the region's broader decarbonization goals.
1. High-Efficiency Power Generation
The first solution addresses the urgent need for decarbonization in markets like Indonesia, aiming to lower carbon footprints in electricity generation. This involves upgrading existing generation units, transitioning fuel types, and optimizing overall systems. Shanghai Electric's modular steam turbines designed for combined gas-steam systems can meet both electricity and heat demands, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. Additionally, the industry’s high-capacity gas turbines are capable of operating on fuel mixtures containing up to 30% hydrogen. The proposed upgrades for coal-fired power plants aim to improve thermal efficiency while decreasing coal consumption, enabling operations with significantly lower carbon emissions.
2. Enhancing Network Resilience
The second solution focuses on modernizing and increasing the resilience of electrical grids, specifically addressing the challenges of renewable energy integration, frequency regulation, and voltage stability in island grids. This initiative incorporates synchronous compensators, energy storage systems utilizing flywheels, and an integrated power module supporting both photovoltaic energy and energy storage. Synchronous compensators and flywheels will provide rapid frequency response and inertial support, while multi-technology energy storage systems will cater to both short- and long-term storage needs. Integrated power modules will facilitate clean plug-and-play emergency power solutions for remote areas and critical load demands.
3. Integrated Power-to-X Solutions
The third showcased solution involves comprehensive Power-to-X integrated solutions based on investments from Jilin Taonan. This encompasses the entire technology chain—from wind and solar power generation to green hydrogen production, biomass gasification, and green methanol synthesis. Notably, the project achieved an impressive milestone by bunkering 8,000 tons of green methanol, setting a world record for a single bunkering operation. With future plans to produce 200,000 tons of green methanol and 10,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel annually, Shanghai Electric is set to expand the use of these solutions across the ASEAN maritime and aviation markets, supporting the supply of low-emission fuels.
Local Significance and Industry Leadership
Shanghai Electric's strong regional presence and experience are instrumental in the development of these technologies. Their equipment and services are already deployed in markets across Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. For instance, their involvement in the Pelabuhan Ratu coal power plant (3 × 350 MW) project in Indonesia, a renewable energy facility in Selangor, Malaysia, and the recent 500 MW class gas-steam project in Sarawak, Malaysia, exemplify the company’s commitment to enhancing conventional energy sectors through high-efficiency gas production, renewable energy advancements, and green fuels.
During the Enlit Asia 2026, Shanghai Electric also participated in the official conference program, giving a technical presentation titled "High-Power Gas Turbine Technology for Clean, Efficient, and Smart Power Generation." They shared insights on their technology roadmap and region-specific solutions tailored for high-capacity gas turbines and combined systems, fostering discussions on fuel diversification and the evolution of Indonesia's power grid alongside representatives from PLN, the national power company, local customers, and academic experts in the energy sector.
Commitment to Future Innovations
Looking ahead, Shanghai Electric aims to further leverage its capabilities in energy equipment manufacturing and system solutions. By collaborating with partners across ASEAN, they are poised to drive the transition toward more efficient, stable, and low-emission energy systems throughout Southeast Asia, reinforcing their position as a leader in the energy transformation journey.
