Exploring Solutions for School Refusal and Social Withdrawal in Tokyo

Exploring Solutions for School Refusal and Social Withdrawal in Tokyo

On June 28, 2025, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, an important discussion will take place at Pal System Tokyo's headquarters in Higashi-Shinjuku. The event titled "Considering School Refusal and Social Withdrawal: From 'Living Difficulty' to 'Living Comfortably'" aims to tackle the critical themes surrounding school refusal and social withdrawal. This initiative is spearheaded by Yoko Nishimura, the director of the cooperative, and features prominent educator and sociologist Keiki Akasura, who has dedicated over 30 years to promoting free schools and alternative educational solutions in Japan.

The Role of NPOs in Supporting Youth

Keiki Akasura, the representative of the NPO TDU University, is committed to providing a safe and constructive learning environment for individuals over 18 experiencing social withdrawal. This university, unique in its structure, focuses on helping students overcome feelings of self-doubt and fostering connections that suit their identities and lifestyles. The event will highlight Akasura's insights into the current education system's challenges and explore how young people can pursue fulfilling lives despite societal pressures.

Akasura's extensive background in sociological research informs his approach to education, advocating for environments where children can choose their paths, engage freely, and learn both in group and individualized settings. His work emphasizes the necessity to prioritize personal feelings and learning interests among students, finding inspiration in both local and global contexts. By addressing the struggles of both the children facing school refusal and their families, he will provide valuable guidance on finding paths to 'living comfortably'.

Urgent Situation in Educational Context

According to Japan's Ministry of Education, the number of school-refusing students in 2023 reached 415,252, marking a continual rise for the eleventh consecutive year. The estimated number of university students experiencing similar issues is around 80,000, albeit without formal statistics tracking these cases. Bullying, a significant factor contributing to school refusal, has also seen a staggering increase, with recorded incidents hitting 732,568.

The educational environment often inundates students and teachers alike with obligations and norms, leading to a record-high of 7,119 teachers taking sick leave due to mental health concerns. Alarmingly, the number of reports regarding student suicides reached an unprecedented 527 in 2024, indicating a dire need for systemic change in how education is approached in Japan.

The societal expectation for conformity often stifles individuality, which is increasingly evident in Japan. Pal System Tokyo aims to create a community where everyone understands each other and can realize their true potential, thus addressing these pressing concerns through its upcoming event.
