Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Funding for Personalized Cancer Treatment
On February 28, 2025, Florida's Governor Ron DeSantis revealed a significant funding initiative aimed at enhancing access to innovative cancer treatments in the state. A total of $2 million has been allocated from the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund to support personalized cancer therapy technology developed at Florida International University (FIU).
This funding is particularly directed towards research conducted by Dr. Diana Azzam, a leading figure at FIU's Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, who has pioneered a revolutionary approach known as functional precision medicine. This method integrates genetic testing with individual drug testing on tumor samples, allowing oncologists to tailor treatments more effectively. The efficacy of this approach is backed by promising results from a clinical study that indicated an 83% improvement rate among patients treated with Azzam's strategy.
Dr. Azzam is currently engaged in various clinical trials aimed at personalizing cancer treatments for both children and adults. The recent grant to First Ascent Biomedical, a company she co-founded, will catalyze the integration of artificial intelligence with her precision medicine platform. This development is expected to enhance clinical data that will facilitate the FDA approval process, thereby accelerating insurance coverage and nationwide utilization of this innovative treatment model.
