Recent Study Reveals Actual Funeral Offering Amounts in Three Japanese Cities

Understanding the Financial Aspects of Funeral Offerings in Japan

In the ever-complex landscape of funeral services, a recent study conducted by Delight Inc. has unveiled crucial insights regarding monetary contributions known as 'oshu' or offerings in Japanese funerals. This research, focusing on three key cities: Yokohama, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, revealed significant variations in average offering amounts, addressing a pressing need for transparency in funeral-related costs.

A Closer Look at the Study

On March 20, 2026, Delight Inc., headquartered in Shinjuku, Tokyo, made public the results of a survey involving 91 actual monetary contributions across the specified cities. The findings indicated that average offering amounts for funerals were approximately ¥300,000, whereas for memorial services such as the 49th day and first anniversary ceremonies, the offerings ranged around ¥100,000.

Interestingly, the study highlighted discrepancies in offering amounts based on the individuals' geographical locations, specifically noting an approximate variance of ¥180,000 for Shingon sect funerals and about ¥160,000 for Soto sect funerals. These variations reflect the disparity in customary practices related to offerings, largely shaped by cultural and regional dynamics.

Background and Consumer Insights

The motivation behind this research stems from a recent survey conducted by Delight Inc., where over half of the respondents expressed a need for real-world examples of costs associated with funerals, particularly focusing on offerings and total expenses. During the survey, which probed 1,000 individuals aged 40 to 59, 50.7% indicated that they wished to know the detailed expenses, including offerings and meals, before selecting a funeral service provider.

Evidently, many consumers struggle with the ambiguity surrounding the costs of offerings. A separate study conducted by Delight in January 2025 directed questions towards 1,002 respondents about challenges they faced determining offering amounts. The largest feedback clocked in at 41.6%, with consumers highlighting that understanding standard prices or guidelines was challenging, while around 20.8% felt uncomfortable directly asking temples or priests for guidance.

Traditional norms dictate that offerings signify gratitude but unlike many services, there are no set prices making it a gray area for many.

Offering Amount Breakdown

To present a comprehensive view, the study dissected the average offering amounts by city, as follows:

Yokohama

  • - Funeral Offering: ¥320,000
  • - Memorial Service Offering (49th Day / First Anniversary): ¥89,000

Nagoya

  • - Funeral Offering: ¥336,000
  • - Memorial Service Offering: ¥102,000

Fukuoka

  • - Funeral Offering: ¥310,000
  • - Memorial Service Offering: ¥87,000

The figures presented help illuminate the monetary expectations associated with different funeral services and the distinct nuances based on city and religion.

Delight Inc. continues to prioritize transparency in the funeral industry by sharing instances of actual offering expenditures from various temples.
