In November 2025, Fancrew Inc., based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, conducted an extensive consumer survey involving 862 registered users of their platform. The survey aimed to gather insights on consumer behavior related to e-commerce sites, focusing on how individuals research and choose products online.
Key Findings
The survey revealed that a staggering 92% of respondents actively engage in research and comparison when purchasing products online. Notably, this trend is most prevalent among consumers aged 50 and above, indicating a significant generational difference. Among the various sources of information consulted during this research phase, user reviews and ratings on e-commerce sites emerged as the most trusted tool, with 90% of respondents relying on them. Following closely, 65% cited product descriptions and images from the sites themselves as influential factors.
Preferred E-Commerce Sites
When asked about their primary e-commerce platforms, nearly half (49%) of the respondents identified Amazon as their go-to site for purchases. The data revealed a notable preference among younger consumers, especially those in their 20s, showcasing Amazon's dominance in the online marketplace.
In terms of product categories, the survey highlighted interesting trends. For daily necessities and health care products, respondents predominantly turned to Amazon and Rakuten. Conversely, when it came to food and beverages, Yahoo! Shopping was the preferred choice for many shoppers. This suggests varied consumer preferences based on product types and the platforms utilized for purchasing them.
Comprehensive Survey Overview
In addition to the findings above, the survey also explored other aspects such as key factors influencing purchasing decisions and the most desired product categories for the upcoming holiday season. The full questionnaire consisted of 30 questions designed to cover a broad spectrum of consumer interests and behaviors in the e-commerce space.
The survey methodology involved an online format and targeted general consumers across Japan, specifically leveraging the immense user base of 1.5 million registered individuals on the Fancrew platform as potential respondents. The results were compiled between November 26 and December 6, 2025.
