Talos Energy Reports Major Success in Gulf of Mexico Drilling Operations

Talos Energy's Recent Drilling Milestone

Talos Energy Inc. has recently made a major announcement regarding its drilling operations in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, specifically at the Katmai West #2 well, which is situated in the Ewing Bank area. This well has successfully struck commercial quantities of both oil and natural gas, marking a significant achievement for the company.

Key Highlights of the Drilling Results

The Katmai West #2 well was drilled with remarkable efficiency, coming in significantly under budget and ahead of schedule. The well reached a depth of about 27,000 feet, fluidly hitting the primary target zone as anticipated. This discovery revealed over 400 feet of gross hydrocarbon pay, confirming the excellent rock quality predicted prior to drilling.

According to Talos, the expected production capacity from the newly drilled well aligns with their pre-drill predictions, estimating about 15,000 to 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. This positive outcome from Katmai West #2, coupled with the productive results from the previously drilled Katmai West #1 well, has nearly doubled the estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) for the Katmai West field, now projected at approximately 50 million barrels of oil equivalent. Furthermore, the total resource potential for this area is estimated to be around 100 million barrels.

Future Production Plans

The drilling ship West Vela, which began operations in October 2024, is expected to complete its work on the well by the end of January 2025. Following this, Talos Energy will finalize plans for the completion phase, with production slated to begin in late Q2 of 2025. The completed well is expected to tie into existing subsea infrastructure that connects to the Tarantula facility, which has been upgraded to handle an increased capacity of 35 MBoe/d.

This expansion will enable the Katmai wells to be optimally utilized, allowing extended periods of stable production while minimizing declines.

Insights from Leadership

John Spath, the Interim Co-President and Head of Operations at Talos, expressed pride in the team’s achievements in executing the drilling effectively. He noted that the project was delivered approximately 35% under budget and more than a month early, showcasing Talos's capability to manage complex projects while adhering to high safety and environmental standards. Spath emphasized the promising outlook for the greater Katmai area, stating that the results validate their pre-drill expectations regarding resource potential.
