WeRide Launches First Autonomous Robobus Shuttle at Zurich Airport, Expanding European Presence

WeRide Expands Mobility Solutions in Europe

WeRide Inc., a leading player in autonomous driving technology, has recently taken a significant step in expanding its European operations with the launch of its Robobus autonomous shuttle service at Zurich Airport. This deployment is not only a noteworthy advancement for WeRide but also marks a pivotal moment in the realm of urban transportation in Europe.

In cooperation with Flughafen Zürich AG and Swiss Transit Lab (STL), the introduction of the Robobus is anticipated to improve transportation for airport employees, linking the employee entrance to maintenance areas via a specialized route serving doors 101 to 130. Starting in the first quarter of 2025, this innovative service aims to enhance the operational capabilities of Zurich Airport, a key European aviation hub.

The Robobus can accommodate up to nine passengers and is poised to be the first commercially operational autonomous bus shuttle in a European airport. Prior to this launch, WeRide had already implemented its autonomous taxi service, Robotaxi, successfully mapping routes at Zurich Airport, indicating the viability of further applications within Switzerland.

Operating near the majestic Alps, Zurich Airport poses formidable challenges for autonomous vehicle technology due to its complex operational environment and varying climatic conditions. Nonetheless, WeRide's proven technical expertise, along with extensive experience from successful implementations in over 30 cities across seven countries, allows it to tackle these challenges effectively, ensuring a dependable and mature solution.

The launch at Zurich follows WeRide's successful autonomous shuttle operation at the French Open in 2024, where it provided services over a five-kilometer route in collaboration with Groupe Renault. This previous success has laid the groundwork for more sustainable public transport solutions elsewhere.

The Robobus at Zurich will initially operate with a safety driver on board, transitioning to remote monitoring operations as the service matures, reinforcing WeRide's commitment to safety and reliability. Flughafen Zürich AG has confirmed that WeRide's technology meets all necessary legal and safety standards for operations at the airport and adheres to stringent data protection regulations.

Looking ahead, WeRide is working closely with Swiss Transit Lab to ensure efficient operation of the Robobus service, solidifying its position in the autonomous vehicle space across Europe. This initiative not only strengthens WeRide's footprint in Europe but also illustrates the potential of autonomous solutions in enhancing urban mobility in one of the continent's busiest airports.
