Unveiling Opportunities at the Global Entrepreneurship Event
On June 1, 2025, the Canada Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo will serve as the venue for a collaborative event hosted by the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and Chiba University. Titled "Pioneering Entrepreneurship Education for Future Societies: Learning from Japanese-Canadian Educational Practices and Student Pitching," the event aims to introduce the entrepreneurial mindsets and practical skills necessary to thrive in today's global society.
Highlights of the Event
1. Introduction of Groundbreaking Practical Entrepreneurial Education
For over 15 years, TMU has been at the forefront of implementing practical education focused on social issues. One of its landmark initiatives, the "Zone Learning" platform, represents the essence of its educational model, emphasizing hands-on innovation. TMU also became the first Canadian university to establish a minor in Innovation and Zone Learning, allowing students to earn credits through venture activities.
In addition, TMU is home to the DMZ, recognized as the world's leading university-based startup incubator, which has supported over 2,400 startups over the last 14 years. With global programs expanding, DMZ will launch its Japan branch, DMZ Japan, in January 2025.
Chiba University has also taken significant steps to bolster entrepreneurship support by launching the Chiba University Startup Lab in 2022. The university plans to establish a cross-disciplinary Entrepreneurship Center in 2025, focusing on cultivating independent global talent across various fields.
2. Presentation of Results from the Innovative Challenge
The "Innovation Challenge" project is an initiative where Japanese and Canadian students work together to promote Japan's traditional fermented culture worldwide. This collaborative project focuses on products like sake and its by-products, including sake lees.
During the event, students will showcase their venture ideas aimed at global expansion, developed through user interviews and market research conducted during the Osaka Expo. Participants will have the opportunity to watch their presentations in English, showcasing business ideas co-created across cultures.
3. Networking Opportunities for Educators, Students, and Entrepreneurs
The event serves as a platform where educators can gain insights on connecting education with practice through presentations and panels. After the closing remarks, a networking session will provide an informal environment where participants can engage and exchange ideas.
