Greenville Technical College Unveils Innovative Center for Welding and Automation Excellence
On August 20, 2026, Greenville Technical College celebrated the grand opening of its highly anticipated Center for Welding and Automation Excellence (CWAE). This remarkable 44,000 square foot facility is set to revolutionize the training of welders and address the critical workforce shortage impacting the industry today.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including college leaders, local elected officials, faculty, staff, students, and representatives from the organizations that contributed to the creation of this state-of-the-art center. Notable architects from Goodwyn Mills Cawood and contractors from Thompson Turner Construction were also present to mark this significant occasion.
As the largest and most advanced welding facility in the Southeast, CWAE addresses a severe labor gap that currently sees approximately 400,000 welding job vacancies across the nation. With only one new welder adequately prepared to join the workforce for every four professionals who retire or leave the field, this center is a response to an urgent need.
President Larry Miller expressed the mission of Greenville Technical College succinctly: "Our aim is to empower individuals, change lives, and reshape communities." The center not only prepares students for successful careers but also plays a vital role in driving economic growth within the region. By equipping students with essential skills, CWAE ultimately reshapes the local economy.
The development of this facility was made possible through a combined investment of $15 million allocated by the South Carolina General Assembly, alongside an additional $3 million in equipment funded through the late Senator Lindsey Graham, the federal government, and significant contributions from various organizations. These include a naming sponsorship from Fluor for the main welding lab, along with donations from the Vermeer Charitable Foundation, ORBIS Corporation, and Liburdi Dimetrics, among others.
The center is equipped with cutting-edge technology that includes the nation’s only AI-powered welding lab, which allows students to work with advanced systems designed to enhance precision and efficiency. The facility features robot-assisted welding sections, a Non-Destructive Testing Lab for crucial quality assessments, as well as MIG, pipe, and laser welding labs that ensure comprehensive training.
What's more, the expansion capacity within the facility significantly enhances the training potential; it has increased from four robotic stations to 16 and total welding stations from 90 to 122. This transformation allows the college and Greenville County Schools to accommodate a surge in interest, boosting available seats from 120 to a remarkable 486, marking a 305% increase in training opportunities.
The second floor of the building is dedicated to collaborative spaces, breakout rooms, and study areas, all accentuated by large windows overlooking the training areas below. This architectural design not only enhances learning but also allows visitors, students, and industry partners to observe the innovations taking place within the center, fostering inspiration and collaboration.
In conclusion, the CWAE at Greenville Technical College marks a pivotal step towards closing the skills gap in the welding industry and offers a beacon of opportunity for aspiring welders in the Southeast. With its advanced equipment and comprehensive training programs, it stands ready to empower the next generation of skilled workers, ensuring economic vitality and job security for many in the years to come.
