Author Health® Debuts Innovative Dementia Care Model in Partnership with CMS

Author Health® Introduces a Revolutionary Dementia Care Model with CMS

On July 15, 2025, Author Health®, a dedicated provider of mental health and dementia care services for Medicare recipients, announced a significant milestone in the realm of dementia care. The organization has officially launched the Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) Model in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This innovative initiative aims to improve the quality of life for individuals living with dementia while offering essential support and resources for their caregivers.

Addressing the Growing Dementia Crisis

Dementia affects nearly 6.7 million Americans, with a staggering 11 million acting as unpaid caregivers. The emotional and financial toll on these individuals, not to mention the direct medical costs that are estimated at $80 billion annually, is immense. Through the GUIDE Model, CMS looks to address these challenges by establishing a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to dementia care, addressing both health and social needs.

Katherine Hobbs, CEO of Author Health, underscored the importance of this initiative. She stated, "Given the aging population, increasing dementia prevalence, and associated costs, innovation from CMS is paramount for creating and testing effective care delivery models. The GUIDE Model extends our integrated and personalized treatment approach to reach a broader audience, benefitting both patients and their caregivers."

A New Model for Comprehensive Care

In a departure from traditional payment structures, the GUIDE Model replaces standard fee-for-service reimbursement with an alternative payment model. This encourages high-quality, interdisciplinary-care coordination. Participating providers receive a stipend for each beneficiary per month, incentivizing a standardized and comprehensive care delivery process.

The model emphasizes caregiver inclusion, providing them with a personalized care plan alongside the patient. Caregivers will also benefit from financial assistance for respite services, 24-hour phone support, and educational resources—vital tools designed to ease the burden often shouldered by unpaid caregivers.

Further bolstering this initiative, 390 participants from various sectors—including health systems, home health providers, and accountable care organizations—have been selected to participate in this transformative program. This diverse representation is critical in achieving the program's goals while playing a pivotal role in CMS's shift to value-based care.

Tackling Complexity in Dementia Care

Dementia is complex and heterogeneous, presenting various psychiatric symptoms that complicate care. Author Health's robust team of dementia care specialists is equipped to handle these challenges, addressing cognitive difficulties alongside behavioral complications.

Dr. Manjola Van Alphen, Chief Medical Officer at Author Health, highlighted the gaps often found in patient care: "Individuals living with dementia seldom have the chance to share their complete story and rarely engage with a dedicated care team tailored to their complex needs. Caregivers share in this struggle, often feeling lost and unsupported. The GUIDE model’s comprehensive support system not only prioritizes the patient but also emphasizes caregiver assistance, aligning perfectly with our mission."

Author Health's Commitment to Mental Health

Founded in 2022 by leading behavioral health experts, Author Health specializes in supporting Medicare recipients grappling with mental health disorders and dementia. Utilizing a virtual-first care model, the organization integrates clinical expertise, care management, and community support to drive improved outcomes while minimizing costs.

Currently operational in Florida and Texas, Author Health collaborates with health plans and provider groups to enhance mental healthcare delivery. As it embarks on this new chapter with the GUIDE Model, Author Health reaffirms its commitment to providing quality care while transforming the experiences of both patients and caregivers dealing with dementia.
