Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Welcomes New Leadership Under Dr. Joe Mitchell
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Welcomes Dr. Joe Mitchell as President and Chief Executive Officer
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has announced a significant change in its leadership with the appointment of Dr. Joseph Mitchell, also known as Joe Mitchell, as the new President and Chief Executive Officer. This transition marks a pivotal moment for the nation's first children's hospital as it strives to enhance pediatric healthcare.
Dr. Mitchell, a well-respected figure in the medical community, succeeds Madeline Bell, who dedicated nearly four decades to CHOP, including 11 years as CEO before retiring. With over 20 years of experience in pediatric healthcare and organizational leadership, Dr. Mitchell is poised to advance CHOP's mission of providing exceptional patient care, innovation, and quality improvement.
Having joined CHOP as President in April 2025, Dr. Mitchell spent the past 18 months familiarizing himself with the hospital's leadership, staff, and community partners. This groundwork has prepared him to take on his new role effectively.
In his own words, Dr. Mitchell expressed excitement about the opportunity to lead: "Every day, CHOP's teams make a profound difference for children and families facing their most challenging moments. I am excited to work alongside our teams as we continue advancing breakthrough research, expanding access to care, and delivering the best possible outcomes for children and families. The future is incredibly bright for CHOP and the patients we serve."
Before his tenure at CHOP, Dr. Mitchell held significant positions, such as Executive Vice President at Boston Children's Hospital and President of Franciscan Children's. During his time at these institutions, he championed notable growth initiatives, including securing necessary approvals for a new, state-of-the-art pediatric facility set to open in 2029. Additionally, he spearheaded a major capital campaign aimed at modernizing and expanding hospital facilities.
Dr. Mitchell’s extensive background includes 14 years at McKinsey & Company, where he served as a Partner, advising healthcare organizations on strategies and operations. He is a physician trained in urology, having completed his residency at the Harvard program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, along with a research fellowship funded by the National Institutes of Health at the University of California, San Francisco.
His arrival at CHOP comes at a time when the hospital is committed to tackling the most complex issues in pediatric healthcare through top-tier patient care, groundbreaking research, and a strong focus on education and advocacy. Dr. Mitchell aims to continue this legacy by investing in innovative care models and scientific advancements in pediatric medicine.
Founded over 170 years ago, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia remains a cornerstone in the field of pediatric healthcare. With Dr. Mitchell's leadership, CHOP is set to embark on an exciting journey, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of pediatric care and innovation. As the hospital advances into this new chapter, stakeholders, including staff, patients, families, and the community, can expect a continued commitment to excellence in all areas of care.
