Kasumigaseki Capital Wins Minister of Agriculture Award for Excellence in Food Distribution

Kasumigaseki Capital Honored with Prestigious Award

Kasumigaseki Capital Corporation, based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, has been awarded the Minister of Agriculture Award at the 47th Excellence in Food Industry Awards. This recognition is a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to developing and operating innovative refrigerated logistics facilities that cater to the diverse needs of the freezing and refrigerating food sector. The awards were co-hosted by the Japan Food Industry Center and the Food Distribution Rationalization Promotion Organization.

The Expanding Frozen Food Market

Japan's frozen food market has surpassed an astonishing ¥1.3 trillion, with citizens consuming approximately 23.6 kilograms of frozen food annually—an average of about 65 grams per day. With the recent expansion of the e-commerce landscape coupled with varied lifestyle demands, the frozen food sector has grown rapidly, achieving a production value of around ¥800 billion domestically.

Despite this significant growth, the supply of cold storage facilities has not kept pace, resulting in a critical shortage of storage space. Existing refrigerated warehouses face various challenges, including aging infrastructure, compliance with the 2030 refrigerant regulations, and a shortage of labor.

In response to these significant issues, Kasumigaseki Capital has developed a specialized model for “rental, multi-tenant” refrigerated warehouses. Since launching its logistics facility development over five years ago, the company has successfully completed 13 warehouses nationwide, including dry storage facilities. Furthermore, the Kasumigaseki Capital Group is addressing the ever-evolving storage needs by managing logistic hubs that can accommodate short-term usage and small-scale storage—a service that had previously been challenging to provide. These initiatives led to the company receiving the Minister of Agriculture Award during this year’s Excellence in Food Industry Awards.

About the Excellence in Food Industry Awards

The Excellence in Food Industry Awards were established in 1979 with the objective of contributing to the development of the food industry and the enhancement of national food consumption. Since then, it has recognized outstanding achievements in the food manufacturing and distribution sectors, honoring companies, organizations, and individuals demonstrating exceptional technical skills and abilities. This initiative operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and is jointly organized by the Japan Food Industry Center and the Food Distribution Rationalization Promotion Organization. The Food Distribution category specifically honors those who have made significant contributions to the rationalization and advancement of the food wholesale and retail industries.

Commentary from Company Vice President

In a statement regarding the award, Ryo Sugimoto, Vice President and Head of the Infrastructure Innovation Division, expressed: “Receiving the Minister of Agriculture Award at the 47th Excellence in Food Industry Awards is an immense honor. This accolade reflects the dedicated efforts of our partner companies and the operational teams working hard on the ground. Japan's frozen food market continues to evolve, currently exceeding ¥1.3 trillion, which signifies ongoing growth. Nevertheless, the supply of refrigerated storage remains a pressing challenge, further compounded by the 2030 refrigerant regulations and labor shortages. We are committed to strategically advancing the development of rental, multi-tenant refrigerated warehouses to meet these societal demands.”

Sugimoto added, “We will continue to develop infrastructure that sustainably supports the food industry over the long term. Today, warehouse facilities serve not just as storage spaces, but as essential infrastructures designed to optimize logistics flows. As we strive to be a trusted entity within the market and society, our team is committed to enhancing the stability and sustainability of logistics operations.”
