ADDF's Transition in Leadership
The Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) has announced a significant leadership change as Dr. Howard Fillit, one of its founders and the Chief Science Officer (CSO), steps into an emeritus role. This transition comes as Dr. Fillit wraps up an illustrious career that has spanned over five decades in Alzheimer’s research, with more than 30 years dedicated to guiding the scientific vision and strategy of the ADDF.
In Dr. Fillit's new capacity, he will continue to serve as a trusted advisor while Laura Nisenbaum, PhD, temporarily takes on the CSO role. The ADDF is concurrently partnering with Russell Reynolds Associates to search for a new CSO who will be integral in shaping the organization's scientific direction and advancing its mission of transforming Alzheimer’s care.
Recognizing a Legacy
Dr. Fillit’s extensive contributions have had a profound impact on the ADDF and the broader Alzheimer's research community. Ronald S. Lauder, co-founder of the ADDF, highlighted that Dr. Fillit was the ideal choice to lead the organization when it was established. Under his stewardship, the ADDF has been at the forefront of numerous pivotal advancements in Alzheimer’s research, including the development of disease-modifying therapies and diagnostic tools.
Dr. Fillit has played a central role in fostering a new approach to Alzheimer's research, proposing a biology-driven strategy that has shifted the focus from solely amyloid plaques to a more comprehensive understanding of the disease’s complexities. This model has become vital for the current therapeutic pipeline, which is expected to yield a new generation of treatments for patients soon. Significant milestones achieved by the ADDF, such as the first FDA-approved Alzheimer’s blood test and PET scan, are largely attributed to Dr. Fillit’s leadership and the organization's innovative funding strategies.
A Vision for the Future
Isobel Coleman, Chief Executive Officer of the ADDF, has expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Fillit's influence, stating that his vision reshaped the field’s approach to Alzheimer’s. As the ADDF moves forward in its quest for a new CSO, it is well-equipped to build on the momentum generated by Dr. Fillit’s leadership.
Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Fillit stated, "This is the most exciting moment in the history of Alzheimer's research." He emphasized the progress being made in diagnostics and the increasing understanding of the disease itself, attributing much of this advancement to the investments made by the ADDF in bold scientific endeavors. His commitment to the organization and the fight against Alzheimer's remains steadfast as he looks forward to following the progress of the ADDF under its new leadership.
