Jack and Jill of America Brings Literacy and Lasting Impact to North Charleston During 2026 Youth Trip
On April 13, 2026, Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, a leading organization for African American families, embarked on its 2026 Biennial National Youth Trip to North Charleston, South Carolina. This event resonated with a focus on literacy, community service, and the rich cultural heritage of the area.
The trip, themed "Journey to Heritage, Lineage, and Legacy in Lowcountry," provided families from across the nation the opportunity to immerse themselves in the historical narratives and traditions of the region. The initiative paired Jack and Jill families with local organizations like Jenkins Youth Family Village and Murray Hill Recreation Association for a day centered around literacy. Together, participants engaged in creating sustainable community resources, distributing over 400 books, and donating to Jenkins' Freedom School Summer Program to support literacy among local children.
Darlene McGhee Whittington, the 28th National President of Jack and Jill, remarked on the event’s intent: “This year’s theme encourages us to listen closely, observe deeply, and help our children understand that history isn’t just something to memorize; it’s something to discover.” It was evident that the commitment to enhancing literacy within the North Charleston community was achieved through a truly meaningful day of activities.
Ja’nister Herring, the Interim Executive Director of Jenkins Youth Family Village, echoed this sentiment, stating, “With the donation of books and literacy resources to the community, it turned into a genuinely significant and enjoyable literacy day for everyone involved.” The community service activation was also covered by local media outlets, highlighting the event’s positive impact.
A unique highlight of the trip was a creative storytelling and writing workshop led by South Carolina author Antwan Eady, renowned for his award-winning illustrated book, Nigel and the Moon. This session inspired creativity, storytelling, and literary expression among the youth of Jack and Jill.
Throughout the weekend, families from Jack and Jill experienced the richness of Lowcountry culture through educational activities, reflection, and fellowship. The Biennial National Youth Trip emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to leadership development, literacy, and community impact.
Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, proudly partnered with Jenkins Youth Family Village and Murray Hill Recreation Association in an initiative that showcased the importance of literacy, representation, and the lasting value of community-centered service. This remarkable event received the support of the Jack and Jill of America Foundation and Target Corporation.
