Liberty Dogs™ Celebrates First Graduating Class of Veterans and Service Dogs

Liberty Dogs™, a vital nonprofit organization based in Reno, Nevada, recently hosted its inaugural graduation ceremony, a momentous occasion that celebrated the unbreakable bond formed between U.S. military Veterans struggling with PTSD and their newly assigned Service Dogs. On October 30, 2026, four Veterans representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines stood proudly on the premises of the Liberty Dogs campus, marking an essential step towards their healing journey.

The graduation served as a poignant reminder of the organization's mission: to ensure that no Veteran walks the path to recovery alone. As expressed by retired Maj. Gen. Ondra L. Berry, the CEO of Liberty Dogs™ and himself a Veteran, the event represented not just an end, but the beginning of a lifelong partnership aimed at fostering healing and support. “These Veterans spent their careers looking out for others,” Berry remarked, emphasizing the importance of mutual support and companionship in overcoming the challenges posed by post-traumatic stress.

To prepare for this day, each Veteran underwent an extensive application process, which included interviews and assessments tailored to match them with a purpose-bred Service Dog. The Liberty Dogs team considered various aspects—lifestyle, needs, personality, and goals of the Veterans—while taking into account the temperament and skills of the dogs. The canines underwent rigorous training for months, focusing on advanced obedience, public access, and task training.

Upon being matched, each Veteran and their Service Dog spent two weeks on campus, learning to work together. This immersive experience came at no cost to the participants, who also enjoyed housing and meals throughout their training.

The first graduating class included remarkable individuals such as Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Marc O. Allen, who was paired with his Service Dog Daisy. After years of dedicated service to his country, Allen arrived at Liberty Dogs seeking support to enhance his everyday life, and it was Daisy who helped him regain his confidence and comfort.

Retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sgt. Jarrid Jones was another inspiring figure in this cohort. Once skeptical about the possibility of such partnerships, Jones found a new sense of hope through his connection with Libby, a spirited black Labrador.

Navy Veteran Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathan Harrell and his companion Maddie, and Army Veteran Sgt. Rich Earl with Reagan, the calm and gentle black Labrador, further illustrated the organization's profound impact. The training and growth of these remarkable dogs were evident as each Veteran expressed how their new companion would enrich their lives, be it through social activities or simply finding solace in the comforting presence of a trained canine partner.

Laura Edwards, Liberty Dogs’ chief canine officer, highlighted that graduation signifies not the end of the journey, but a commitment to ongoing support tailored to each Veteran’s unique life circumstances. Liberty Dogs™ not only provides a Service Dog but also constructs a personalized plan, ensuring continuous assistance to foster success in their adjustment to life together.

The campus itself, which officially opened in the summer of 2026, stands as a testament to the dedication and resources committed to serving these brave men and women. By removing financial barriers, Liberty Dogs guarantees that every participating Veteran can focus solely on their journey towards independence and renewed purpose, accompanied by their four-legged partners.

As this first graduating class embarks on their new journey with their Service Dogs, Liberty Dogs remains steadfast in its commitment to expand its programs, reaching out to more Veterans year after year.
