Local Businesses Unite to Revitalize the Historic Outpost Storefront in Holland

Reviving Heritage: The Outpost Storefront Restoration

A Local Initiative for a Historic Landmark

In a remarkable show of community spirit, ODL, Inc., a Zeeland-based company, is playing a pivotal role in the restoration of the iconic façade of the Outpost building situated in the heart of downtown Holland, Michigan. Notably, this initiative forms part of a broader effort aimed at revitalizing historic architecture within the area.

Unique Contributions to the Renovation

ODL, Inc. has lent its expertise through its specialized division, ODL Custom Solutions, to design and fabricate ten custom transom window units that will enhance the storefront's appearance. This meticulous collaboration dovetails with the efforts of Pella Windows and Doors of Western Michigan, as well as Restore Consulting, illustrating how local partnerships can yield significant results that honor a town’s architectural heritage.

Dave Converse, Supervisor at ODL Custom Solutions, expressed enthusiasm for the project: "Being part of this renovation, so close to our corporate office, is incredibly rewarding for our team. We're excited to contribute to our community while providing a solution that blends beauty with functionality."

Overcoming Design Challenges

The restoration presented several challenges; not least was the need to conceal mechanical elements located between floors while preserving the traditional aesthetic of the storefront. ODL's design team collaborated closely with Restore Consulting to explore multiple design mock-ups before arriving at a cost-effective solution that utilized satin etch and narrow reeded glass enhanced with stick-on lead tape. This design approach provides the vintage aesthetic reminiscent of camed glass while incorporating modern efficiency at a more accessible price point.

Streamlined Installation Process

In a bid to facilitate a smooth installation process, ODL pre-glazed each insulated glass unit into sashes manufactured by Pella, adhering strictly to the company's glazing protocols. This preparation ensured the delivery of a fully assembled product, ready for installation, aligning with both design specifications and project timelines.

A Standout Example of Local Collaboration

Today, the revitalized façade of the Outpost building stands as a testament to the positive outcomes that can emerge from local collaboration. It not only enhances the visual appeal of downtown Holland but also solidifies the importance of community involvement in preserving historical landmarks.
