Arcadis Leads Groundbreaking Study for Desalination in Northern Gulf of California

Arcadis Selected for Appraisal Study

Arcadis, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, has recently embarked on a significant study concerning the proposed Northern Gulf of California Desalination Project. The initiative aims to explore the feasibility of creating up to 500,000 acre-feet of water supply through desalination, a solution gaining traction amid growing concerns over water scarcity in Arizona.

This project comes at a time when Arizona is actively searching for alternative water sources to secure long-term sustainability. The Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA) has entrusted Arcadis to spearhead the engineering and technical analysis required during the project's multi-stage appraisal process, in collaboration with Sacyr Water and a diverse team of experts.

The Appraisal Process

WIFA's appraisal will meticulously assess the potential viability of a desalination facility, alongside associated infrastructure. This evaluation will encompass various factors including technical, financial, environmental, cultural, and regulatory considerations. It’s crucial to clarify that the initial stage authorized by WIFA does not equate to a firm commitment toward project advancement or future funding options; those decisions will depend on the appraisal's outcomes.

WIFA's board has officially approved Stage 1, which authorizes Arcadis to conduct a comprehensive analysis focusing on the proposed concept. The study's design breaks down the evaluation into six interconnected tasks that aim to leave no stone unturned. These tasks span project management, technical evaluations, environmental and cultural assessments, regulatory and contractual reviews, analyses of societal impacts, and an examination of cost, financial, and commercial aspects.

Sustainable Water Management

A unique aspect of this project is the potential integration of geothermal energy as a renewable energy source for the desalination and associated conveyance systems. Heather Polinsky, CEO of Arcadis, emphasized the critical need for reliable water supplies for Arizona's communities, not just for today but for generations to come. She stated, “This appraisal will give WIFA the technical information it needs to assess whether desalination, supported by renewable energy, could strengthen the region's long-term water security.”

The proposed desalination facility represents a forward-thinking approach, as it attempts to lean on sustainable energy sources while potentially augmenting water security for millions in the region.

Arcadis's Commitment to Sustainability

As a company operating in over 30 countries and boasting a workforce of around 34,000 experts, Arcadis is dedicated to delivering innovative and sustainable design solutions across various sectors. The firm utilizes a combination of digital advancements and human insight, working tirelessly to enhance quality of life and protect the environment.

In 2025, Arcadis reported impressive revenues of €4.9 billion, reflecting its solid presence and commitment to sustainable practices in the global market. By aligning its goals with ecological sustainability, Arcadis is actively participating in crafting solutions that meet both current and future challenges in water management.

In conclusion, the appraisal study for the Northern Gulf of California Desalination Project is a vital step toward a potentially transformative water supply strategy for Arizona. With a careful evaluation of the technological and environmental factors influencing desalination processes, the project could pave the way for innovative solutions essential for addressing water shortages in the region.
