Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Service Suspension Announcement
The Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® service, operated under the auspices of the Los Angeles - San Diego - San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency, will temporarily suspend operations for trains running north of Goleta Station. This cessation of service is due to the
La Cañada Honda Bridge Replacement Project, which aims to replace this critical structure dating back 127 years in order to bolster safety and enhance operational efficiency. The suspension will take place from
August 1 to August 16, 2025. During this interval, replacement bus services will be available to assist passengers in their travels.
Project Overview
The La Cañada Honda Bridge is an essential component of the LOSSAN Rail Corridor, which stretches 351 miles and serves both freight and passenger needs across Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties. The upgrade and reconstruction of the bridge, led by
Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), is funded in part by California grants and aims to not only ensure the bridge's long-term reliability but also to improve the speed and capacity of rail services.
This project is expected to shorten travel times and increase ridership while also enabling the railway to operate more sustainably by removing existing speed restrictions and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions through potential future service expansions.
Service Adjustments
In preparation for the bridge replacement, the following service adjustments will be in effect from
August 1 through August 16, 2025:
- - Track Closure: Train services between Goleta and San Luis Obispo will halt due to the bridge work. All trains will terminate or originate at Goleta Station. Normal service is expected to resume on August 17, 2025.
- - Bus Transfers: Passengers traveling north of Goleta will need to disembark at Santa Barbara Train Station where shuttle bus services will connect them to their final destinations.
- - Additional Bus Services: Alternative bus services will operate between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Train numbers 774 and 794 traveling south, and 761 and 779 traveling north, will have corresponding bus connections. These buses will follow the route along Highway 17, stopping at strategic locations including UC Santa Barbara, Solvang, Buellton, Santa Maria, and Grover Beach.
In addition to the new bus services, the existing bus routes along Highway 17 will continue to run on their usual schedules.
