Enhancing Genetic Testing Access in South Florida

In a significant move towards improving public health, jscreen, a prominent nonprofit organization, has expanded its partnership with the Mathew Forbes Romer Foundation (MFRF) to advance genetic testing resources throughout South Florida. This collaboration aims to increase awareness, education, and access to lifesaving genetic testing within communities, ultimately empowering individuals and families to make informed health choices.

The partnership focuses on preventive measures against genetic diseases, leveraging at-home genetic testing to ensure that services are accessible for everyone. jscreen’s mission encompasses promoting better health outcomes through education and the provision of screening options. As Karen Grinzaid, Executive Director of jscreen, emphasizes, “Knowledge is power—and when families understand their genetic risks, they can take meaningful action to protect their health.”

Community Engagement and Upcoming Events

In line with their mission, jscreen and MFRF are inviting the community to participate in engaging programs that will take place across various platforms including religious institutions, academic campuses, and health networks. One of the most anticipated events is the 2nd Annual MFRF 'Brain Health Hustle' 5K Walk/Run, scheduled for January 11, 2026, at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Florida. This fun event not only promotes fitness but also spreads critical messages about genetic brain health and disease prevention.

Along with the 5K, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a Genetic Testing Event that offers two major types of tests: Reproductive Carrier Screening and Hereditary Cancer Screening. These tests are designed to help participants understand their genetic risks regarding conditions such as Tay-Sachs disease, cystic fibrosis, BRCA1, and BRCA2 mutations.
