XCMG Contributes Heavy Machinery for Rescue Operations in Nairobi Building Collapse

On October 23, 2026, a catastrophic 18-story building in the Eastleigh neighborhood of Nairobi collapsed while under construction, prompting a swift response from various emergency services. The scene was chaotic, with ground-floor shops still in operation and construction workers present when the building fell, necessitating immediate rescue efforts from local authorities, including the Kenya Defence Forces and police.

In light of the disaster, XCMG Group, a prominent Chinese construction machinery manufacturer, swiftly mobilized its resources to support the rescue operations. The company’s Kenyan office quickly activated its emergency procedures as reports of the incident surfaced. Coordinating closely with the National Disaster Operations Centre and local police, XCMG dispatched heavy machinery to the site, including an excavator on the same day of the collapse and followed by a 25-ton crane the next day.

The use of heavy machinery proved vital in the rescue efforts. Police officer William Sifuna Watitwa emphasized that the XCMG excavator played a crucial role in freeing two survivors trapped beneath the rubble. The crane allowed rescuers to lift significant debris, significantly increasing the chances of reaching more survivors as officials reported multiple individuals still missing at the time.

Fredrick Nyasani, an administrator at XCMG’s Kenya office, expressed the company's commitment to the local community, stating, "As a Chinese company that has operated in Kenya for many years, we are part of the local community and stand with it in times of need. XCMG has both a responsibility and a duty to use our specialized equipment and technical personnel to support Kenyan rescue teams in saving lives."

By October 25, it was reported that five people were still unaccounted for, while four had been transferred to hospital for treatment. XCMG's team confirmed that they would continue to assist with the recovery efforts at the site, striving to ensure that all possible individuals were rescued and brought to safety.

The deployment of XCMG’s equipment highlights the critical role that heavy machinery can play in emergency situations, underscoring how timely interventions in disaster scenarios can lead to successful outcomes for those trapped. As search and rescue operations progressed, the ongoing presence of XCMG's machinery and personnel remained an essential aspect of the efforts to restore safety and find those still missing. The company’s actions resonate with a larger narrative of corporate responsibility and humanitarian assistance, illustrating how collaboration between local and international resources can have a profound impact in moments of crisis. XCMG is poised to continue its work until the situation is fully resolved, reinforcing its commitment to supporting communities in critical moments.
